Finally my son's quilt top is done! Yay me! I don't think it's quite square but I still love how it turned out.
It's exactly like I planned it! It could use some modifications. If I had tons more of the print fabric I would have fussy cut it but still, I like the randomness of the cars and surfboards scattered about.. I'll definitely keep it in mind for the next quilt from a print fabric.
My son picked the flannel he wanted for the backing from the stash I had set aside for it. I washed it so it won't shrink too much when the quilt is done and it's ready to piece together. It's going to be glaringly bright but it's just the back. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have it all layered and basted so I can get it off of my bedroom floor. Right now I'm just planning to stitch in the ditch so it won't distract from the piecing but later I may get more elaborate, or not.
I ordered the thread to quilt my son's quilt yesterday from Connecting Threads since everyone on the quilting comm recommended them. The price is outrageously cheap for 1200 yd spools, $2 or $1.59 each in a set, so I hope the quality lives up to the quality of their fabric. I have some Aurifil to test it against and some Coats and Clark. I bought the black to white set and 3 extra colored spools. The three extra spools came about because I found a coupon for $5.96 off of an order containing fabric on Retail Me Not and someone said it worked for them even though they only bought books so I decided to try it and it worked. Instead of just taking the discount and running, I decided to add more spools till it came back to the original price. This is my first time using them so if I'm as happy as everyone says I will be, I'm going to go back and buy some more of their thread sets and some fabric.
So I'll put it aside once I have it basted and work on the backing for my daughter's quilt until the thread arrives. The order has already been sent out today so it shouldn't be too long. I can't wait! I'll probably post pics of it basted in the next couple of days because I'm so excited and this has been my main method of documenting this quilt.
