Jack and Renee strolled through Central Park under the shadows of passing zeppelins.
When Jack suggested coffee Renee had looked at him strangely, and had then purchased two plastic containers of Earl Gray Tea.
At last they sat down on a bench, overlooking part of a lake. Some of the banks were encased in rigid blobs of amber.
Jack couldn’t conclude if this world was better or worse than the one he came from. It was…different.
Renee was here, too. Another Renee, both the same and different.
Oh brave new world, that has such people in it.
Jack realized how little he still knew about the Renee he lost.
“You got me out of Fringe Division without too much trouble,” Jack noted.
“I have a certain amount of discretion when it comes to interviewing suspects. But our location is being monitored. Don’t forget that.”
“I won’t. Thank you. It’s good to get out of there.”
“Have you spent a lot of time being locked up?” Renee asked.
“That’s not what you want to know.”
Renee put her tea down and looked at Jack. “I never saw you before today. But you seem familiar. You’re like someone I saw in a dream. Someone I imagined. It makes no sense. The other Renee Walker. You were close to her.” It wasn’t a question.
“We were very close.”
“Then why did you leave?”
Jack stared at the lake.
“If this other Renee was anything like me, than she probably did some sort of police work.”
“You’re right. Counter-terrorism.”
“What happened to her?”
Dammit. Renee was perceptive. No wonder she was in charge of interrogations at Fringe Division.
“I need to know, Mr. Bauer. Please”
“She was shot by a sniper. In the bedroom of my apartment.” Jack said all that quickly while still staring straight ahead.
Renee stared straight ahead too. For just a moment.
“Excuse me,” she said suddenly.
She got up from the bench and ran over to a nearby trash can. Jack could hear her vomiting.
Jack stayed where he was. What else was he suppose to do? He had been in this universe less than a day and already he was harming the people he cared about.
“No, I don’t need an extraction. I’m fine,” he heard Renee mumble to her earpiece.
After a moment Renee returned to the bench. She sat down, as far away from Jack as possible. Still shaky, she managed a sip of tea.
“I shouldn’t have said anything, not yet.” Jack said.
“I asked.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I’m not the woman you lost.”
“Yeah,” Jack replied. Only this was the woman he lost. Sort of. Almost.
“There’s only one of me.” Renee said.
“There’s only one of you left.”
“Mr. Bauer, what do you want from me?”
“I don’t know,” Jack admitted. He stared ahead, despondent. “I didn’t come here to find you. I had no idea you even existed.”
Renee reached underneath her hair and touched something on her ear.
She’s turning off her comm. She wants to talk privately.
“I should be asking you about why you came over here. What you did on the other side. What threat you pose to this universe. But this…woman. This other…Renee Walker. I feel connected to her. And now I feel connected to you. And I don’t know what I’m suppose to do with that.”
“You should do your job.”
“Are you a threat to my universe, Mr. Bauer?”
“Like I said before, I mean no harm to you.”
“I can’t just take your word for it. I need to know what kind of person you are. What you were running from.”
“Agent Walker, I don’t know where to start.”
“You can start with her. With the other...the other me. Tell me everything about her.”
TO BE CONTINUED.
