...A Fringe/24 Crossover

Title: …And Only One Of You, Chapter 1
Characters: Jack/Renee, sort of.
Rating: PG for angst and mopeyness.
Summary: Jack travels to the RedVerse and meets someone familiar.
Disclaimer: 24 and Fringe are the property of Fox.
A/N: I find myself caught between fandoms, hence the crossover. Written with some gentle prodding from leigh57. Unbeta’d, so snicker accordingly.

Interrogation rooms were the same in both universes.

A white room with a one-way window. Harsh lighting. A couple of hard chairs and a table.

Jack had been brought here as soon as he had crossed over, emerging near Central Park. Disoriented by the vortex, he recalled only some of the details of this new world: The World Trade Centre, other buildings he didn’t recognize, zeppelins.

Jack had recognized one woman on the security team who had located and arrested him. Right now she was all he could think of.

The door opened and she entered.

“Renee,” Jack said softly.

“You may address me as Agent Walker.”

Jack looked at her: Sensible black boots, blue cargo pants, a black jacket bearing a logo composed of two “F”s mirroring each other. Her hair was more brown than red, and cut shorter with bangs.

The freckles were there, in slightly different places.

Her eyes were the same.

This Renee looked at her tablet. “Since you won’t tell us your name, we ran you through facial recognition and DNA analysis. You’re not on file. If you are from the other side, then there’s only one of you.”

Her voice. That was the same too. There was a bit of a harder edge to it, but Jack understood why. The hard edge was there deliberately, because she was interrogating him and he was her prisoner. He smiled.

“Is something funny?” Renee asked

“You tell me.”

“You look at me like you know me. We’ve never met. So you must be from the other side. It’s been estimated that about thirty percent of us have doubles.* Is there another one of me?”

Two gunshots through the window. The sound of a body dropping to the wood floor. “No.” Not anymore.

“So you are from the other side. Answer some questions for me. Common knowledge. Things that everyone knows. What year is it?”

“2014.”

Her eyebrow raised. “And who is the president of the United States?”

“Until recently Allison Taylor.”

Renee sat down. “The year is 2011 and the president is Barack Obama.”

“Who?”

“Dammit,” she swore softly. “There are more than two universes. You aren’t from the other side. You’re from somewhere else. Why did you cross over?”

Jack didn’t answer.

“I can make you talk.” Renee said.

He smiled again. “You can try.”

“What do you intend do to this world?”

“Nothing. I mean no harm to you.”

“Than you needed to escape from your own world. Why? Are you a criminal?”

“I’ve made some bad calls.” Jack admitted.

Renee leaned forward. “I’m trying to keep this civilized. I’m giving you the chance to cooperate. I don’t know how advanced your world is. But in this world we’ve developed some very sophisticated interrogation drugs. So give me something before this interview becomes unpleasant. Your name. Start with just your name.”

“Jack Bauer.”

If there was only one of him, then that name would mean nothing.

“You keep looking at me, Mr. Bauer. There is another one of me. Isn’t there? Tell me!”

Her voice was softer now. Almost desperate.

What had happened to this world? Why was his arrival here considered such a threat?

Jack thought of the report on Alan Wilson. Renee had simply not stopped. Jack knew this version of Renee wouldn’t stop either.

This new Renee had already figured one thing out: Jack had come here to escape paying for his crimes.

It wasn’t just his fear of Renee’s interrogation. Jack now realized that he wanted to tell her. She deserved the truth.

“Okay,” Jack said. “You want answers. I’ll give them to you. But not here.”

“Excuse me?”

“You’re right, Agent Walker. I have known another one of you. I want to tell you about her. But not like this. Get me out of here. Let’s go somewhere were we can really talk. Then I’ll tell you everything.”

TO BE CONTINUED.

* I’m making that up. Everybody having a double is impossible: Parents need to get together at exactly the same time, the same sperm has to meet the same egg, and then the Parents have to give their child exactly the same name. And this needs to happen throughout all of history. What are the chances of that?
