channeling Lochlainn?

The last time Celtic Sun was merchanting, I noticed that they were down to their last "learn to spin" kit. So I ordered the components to make some more.

I got home from work yesterday (a lovely day, sunny and temps in the 50s) to find that the stuff had arrived. So instead of a few things I'd thought about doing when I got home, I changed into jeans and sweatshirt and boots, grabbed my work gloves, cell phone and a cup of coffee, and headed out to the workshop.

And that was when it hit me. How many hundreds of times over the past years had Himself come home from work in jeans and sweatshirt and boots, grabbed gloves, hot cuppa and cell phone, and tromped out to the workshop in just this same way? All that was missing was The Hat and the smokes--and I almost picked up The Hat on the way out the door.

It was all just so appropriate. I swear I heard Papa laugh.

It's interesting trying to do some of these wood projects. I know what the raw materials were--I did all the ordering, and I've got the finished product in hand, and I know all the tools are out there in the shop. I just don't necessarily know the processes involved. Like these spinning kits. The spindle is pretty straightforward: a length of dowel, a wheel, a cup hook. But what's the best tool to cut the dowels to length?

(For the record, the correct answer is B., the Japanese handsaw. The fact that the correct answer was B instead of A says something about the magnitude of the learning curve ahead of me, and also why I ordered extra dowels. Don't ask what answer A was--suffice it to say it was definitely overkill.)

It's like having the first and last chapters of a novel, and page fragments between--I know how the story starts and ends, but not how the characters got from A to B. It's up to me to write my own story now.

EDIT: I mentioned this story to Maggie this morning. Her response: "If anything in there moves without your help throw cashews at it and see if it stops."
