Rak Haeng Siam (The Love of Siam) ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Uhm, so. My first ever thai movie. It's not that I've never watched thai dramas before, I have. Like, once. Lol, and it was full of drama. Perhaps too much shrieking :/
Anyway, homophobics should stay away from this post. I mean it.
Rak Haeng Siam is a movie explaning the beauty and sufferings that come in
a package when you experience love. It is a movie that will make you rethink your current circumstances and perhaps, come to appreciate your family and beloved friends more. Well, I know it brought me heartache. Anyway.
The twenty-minute prologue tracks the histories of young Mew (Arthit Niyomkul) and Tong (Jirayu La-ongmanee), who are both schoolmates and neighbors. They form a very close friendship which was abruptly ended when Tong's family had to move out when Tang (Laila Boonyasuk), Tong's elder sister, went missing during a trip in Chiang Mai, causing the family tremendous and irreparable sorrow. Years later, Mew (Witwisit Hirunwongkul), lead singer and composer for an up and coming boy band, again crosses path with Tong (Mario Maurer), who is struggling at home with his domineering mother (Sinjai Plengpanich) and alcoholic father (Songsit Rungnopakunsri). The two reconnect and inevitably fall for each other, disrupting whatever peace they have grown accustomed to.
To make matters more complicated, Mew's Chinese neighbor Ying (Kanya Rattanapetch) is hopelessly in love with Mew, not knowing of his homosexual tendencies. On the other hand, Tong is currently dating Donut (Aticha Pongsilpipat), presumably not knowing of his own homosexual tendencies too. Tong's family, more specifically the father who's been spending days and nights drinking, is still suffering from the loss of Tang. June (also played by Boonyasuk), Mew's band manager who looks a lot like Tang, is then recruited to pose as the long lost daughter, momentarily easing the father of his staggered pains.

I shall state it once and once only. This is not a gay themed movie. If you're thinking that this is a miniscule version of Brokeback Mountain, get out. It's not. It's far more beautiful and meaningful. Not that I didn't enjoy BB mountain :'D
Pchy(Witwisit Hirunwongkul) played Mew wonderfully as a quiet, sophisicated boy, whilst Mario, well. You could almost believe they were in love. Ying and Donut were quite important characters too as you could see the connection between Ying's undying love(obsession?) with Mew whilst Donut. I can't even tell if she ever loved Tong. Maybe she thought he could be played? :/
On the other hand, Tong's family tells a great sob ever since Tang went missing from her trip to Chiangmai. Tong's father becomes an alcoholic, leaving the duty of raising Tong all to the poor mother, played by Sinjai. I have to say, Sinjai really amazed me with her acting. You could tell the despair and the hidden sorrows from her eyes. Sinjai's character hid her sorrow of losing Tang, while the father let it out by drinking. The contrast is shocking.
The appearance of June, Tang's look-alike, sparks hope in the father's life, even if he knows it deep down that she isn't Tang. Likewise, the re-appearance of Mew in Tong's life signifies that life is unpredictable.
The movie also shows us that Mew is a lonely boy, severely mourning and holding his dead grandmother to himself. He has a logic that, is it possible to stop loving a person after they have died? But also, could one go on living without ever loving a person at all? Let's ponder on that, shall we?
The main thing that I loved (and hated) about this story is the open ending that could mean a million things, from a successful love story to a mended marriage. Mew and Tong do not come together, however as Tong says that he loved Mew although he could not be with Mew. There are many hints lying around beneath the events so you have to dig. And pay attention.
Rak Haeng Siam deserves a 15/10 [Because it is too awesome ♥]

Pchy is now the lead singer of August Band, the band formed to play in the movie. And I am not kidding when I say they are successful. Pchy's voice is amazingly sweet and mellow, it can melt your heart. The band member's also display good teamwork and harmony because you can hear all the instruments in alliance instead of working against each other.
Listen to some of these and you'll get what I mean. ♥ I hope you come to like him as much as I do now. ♥♥♥♥♥♥
