I’ve been eyeing all sorts of fanfic memes as of late, though I’ve been shamefully bereft of participating in any. Still, better late than never and this one is ganked from the marvelous Threewalls, as are 99.9% of my ideas nowadays. ;)

Hm...Reks?

I always did wonder about the "goner" in your name. (I don't know if I mentioned it to you, but the first time I saw a link to your work, there was a little disjoint between the hilarity of the fic and the username. XD)

IRL, and occasionally in fic, I'm known for being really damn morbid. That's really how I got that addition to my fake pen name. XD

Reks

A. He's just so damn young and cute, isn't he, and so filled with the fire of his youth (as Maito Gai might put it!) And he seems very devoted to Vaan, who's devoted to him in turn. If I were, say, 14 or so while he was around, I would soooooo have crushed on him. Him and his big, teary eyes are so adorable, yes? ;)

B. But boy does he seem to have a temper on him, as well as Vaan's possibly genetic streak of somewhat ethical stupidity. (What kind of sane man enlists just when the tide is turning against your nation?!)

C. Reks/Penelo, of course! I envision it as being very much like Larsa/Penelo of Knots... only in this case, of course, Penelo's the young, smitten one who's madly in love with an older partner who's mostly embarrassed by her affection. It's cute and tragic by almost equal measure

...never again do I want to picture Maito Gai on a chocobo leading the Dalmascan army. (I might die of laughter. Maito Gai + Green Jumpsuit + Leather Bra = OT3.)

For some reason this comment made me think of Reks as a male Mulan. The whole "entering war with little chance of victory" and "final rush to defend the king/emperor" thing.

Except I remember that Mulan joined for different reasons. And, well, she didn't bite the dirt and Reks did. (Oh, Reks, you pretty little fool. You would've lived if you were in a Disney movie!)

Awwwww. He didn't really love her? :( Well, I guess maybe he was thinking she was too young to take seriously...and now Larsa's stuck in that position. XD I think you mentioned that as being an influence on how Penelo treats Larsa?

Poor pretty Reks... his sparky sad eyes rivaled even Larsa's for sheer cuteness! IF only he had lived-- we could have seen them deployed to great effect!

And Maito Gai's fashion sense might well be embraced in Dalmasca, as would his Springtime of Youth! AT least, Vaan might dig it, even if Penelo is holding in tears of silent laughter (and possibly fending off the amours of Rock Lee) at the same time.

And no... Reks really didn't love her. And even if he lived, he'd have eventually broken up with her sooner or later. He liked her plenty and he certainly... enjoyed her company, even if he felt guilty about it. But loved her? Enough to spend the rest of his life with her?

He never felt that much about her and that's part of the reason why Penelo can be an emotional mess now.

And here's an extremely rough draft of the Reks/Penelo fic. Maybe I'll pick it up again but for now, here's all that's been written so far

awwwwwwwwwwww...I laughed at Reks peeking down. XD And I like the description of Penelo's skin. Although I was a little puzzled by the mention of minstrel tracks--isn't 'track' only for recordings? Does Ivalice have recordings?

...Ooops! ::blush:: There goes me with the ill-timed remarks again... I need to keep those anachronisms from popping up, that. XD

I doubt I'll ever pick this story up again since I have no idea what the ultimate point of it would be. But... ::shrug:: Who knows what'll happen from here till then?
