It’s not love, not even close. Sam’s been in love more times than a man should have to suffer through, and he knows that, no matter what poets blather on about, love doesn’t feel like a knife to the gut. It didn’t send you to the sink, dry heaving, while your partner-in-crime smokes a fag outside and doesn’t look you in eye when you come out. It sure as hell didn’t feel like the scrape of brick against his back or teeth at his throat or fingers clawing at his zip, just trying to get this done before someone sees their sin.
But here he is and here Gene is and there Annie is, inside drinking and she doesn’t know, can’t know, Sam hopes to God she’ll never know because every time he says this is the last time. She deserves better. She deserves the world, but she’s in there, waiting for him to come in, order his drink, sit by her side and bitch about the day. When he comes in, she’ll kiss him without suspicion and if she thinks he tastes odd, she won’t say anything. They all keep silent.
Gene grunts against his shoulder and they’re both done. Sam stares at the rubbish bins strewn around behind Gene. Gene pushes away, zips himself up. They don’t offer platitudes. They don’t apologize or explain. They have no defense and what regret they have clearly isn’t enough to stop them. Gene stomps off to his car, to his wife waiting at home with supper ready.
It’s not a reason, the burning in their skin. It’s not an excuse. And someday-God, someday, please-it won’t be enough.
Sam straightens himself out, brushes the gravel off his knees, and goes inside to join Annie at the bar. She greets him with a kiss.
