I think that he would have made the effort if he'd known the second surgery was going to do what it did.
He had a lot of things on his "bucket list". His kids were at the top. *ALL* of his kids.
The Denis I knew was compassionate, caring, kind and tried really, really hard to keep his asshole side on a leash. He didn't always succeed, but he tried. Kids grow up and have unresolved issues when one of thier parents dies before they can ask them "What the hell were you thinking?". If either Donovan or Aine have those questions, please let them know from someone who knew Denis as a friend to take the best qualities and expand upon them and let the worst qualities be a lesson in what not to do. We're all human and, at one time or another, we will all suffer from severe rectal cranial inversion. But that doesn't mean that we aren't capable of changing. It just means sometimes we run out of time before we can say "I'm sorry".
And, yes, Den did express regret. He just thought he'd have more time to find the right moment and the right words.
As for the "Never said I was smart...*SIGH*" thing, it's not that you're not smart, it's that you *see* what is underneath all the crap and do your best to help it shine through. Unfortunately for people like you and me (and a few others I know), what's underneath the crap doesn't always want to shine through, it wants to stay buried, we just don't understand that it does. The more we try to clean it up, the more it burrows down into the crap. Sometimes, we're just not the right "cleaner" for the job. The trick is to learn to stop trying to clean it up after the first time so we don't get all crappy ourselves. *SHRUG*
