Where our money goes...

From Tom Tomorrow's Blog:

Just now on CNN, Jack Cafferty is reading responses to the question of whether “government insurance” should cover abortion and brings up this doozy courtesy of “Jan from Illinois” :

“No. I am the government. I am the taxpayer. I don’t want anything to do with abortion; this makes me part of it and I refuse to be part of it.”

Welcome to democracy, Jan. You got your pointless war in the Middle East, now we get universal(-ish) healthcare…if we’re lucky.

Ah, what a wonderful concept. Wouldn't it be nice if we could pick and choose what we pay for. Those of us who were opposed to Iraq wouldn't have had to pay for it. In fact, pacifists could refuse to have any of their money go to the military at all. Libertarians could refuse to pay for any infrastructure at all. Religious folks could refuse to pay for abortion or anything they deem "too secular".

I actually wouldn't mind this so much. I don't honestly think the bottom line for much of anything would change. For every lefty who doesn't want to pay for something, the difference would be made up by a righty and vice versa. I sort of laugh at the people who say things like this because for everything they'd like the government to do, I'm sure there is someone who would disagree. Where one person disagrees, another would make up the difference.

What I do see happening is that it would add more layers of bureaucracy to the already overly bureaucratic federal government...and all that does is increase the cost to taxpayers, which really doesn't help anyone.
