Biology for seismology predictions

The NYT has an article about how some scientists are using coral reefs to attempt earthquake prediction. It's rather intriguing. The gist is that they are claiming that the same fault that caused the 2004 Banda Aceh quake (i.e. the one that caused the big ass tsunami and killed hundreds of thousands of people) actually tends to operate in clusters. That is, it'll sit dormant for a few centuries and then pop off a few really big ones within a couple decades. The way they've determined this is by looking at coral reef growth over the past few centuries.

In a sense, it's not "prediction" the way most people think of it. It still isn't terribly specific about when we can expect this to happen...but it's good if people realize that it wasn't a once in a lifetime event.
