I have finished reading Cryoburn. I went into the book cold, knowing only that it was another Miles Vorkosigan novel. I hadn't been to any readings, or seen any sample chapters. I didn't even read the blurb on the dust jacket.

We went camping over the weekend (which got cut short, but that's another story). While packing for the trip, I grandly announced, "I'm going to bring War and Peace to read!" Instead I brought my birthday books.

jkling gave me my birthday gifts early: a print of a trick photo from 1875 showing a decapitated man holding his own bloody head (an early zombie picture, said jkling), and two books by Ed Wood, Jr. Yes, the same Ed Wood who made Plan 9 from Outer Space. Here are the covers:

Succubus on Top, by Richelle Mead - The sequel to Succubus Blues, which I quite liked. I found out about the first book at last year's Norwescon. Richelle had her book displayed in front of her at a panel, and I was intrigued by her description of it.

I just finished reading The Tesseract, by Alex Garland, one of those mainstream lit'rary books. It has several seemingly unrelated story arcs that all connect in the end - like Pratchett but without the funny. Good book, although I thought the ending was a bit abrupt ( Read more... )

I totally forgot to pick up a copy of Naomi Novik's latest book. Hmmm, I guess it's not too early to start a Xmas gift list.

I just snagged a signed copy of Making Money, Terry Pratchett's latest Discworld novel. From what I heard, Pratchett signed a bunch of signature pages, which were then bound into random copies. Is it wrong that I want to put World War Z under nonfiction on my Goodreads page? I haven't really gotten into Goodreads too much, although I do like being able to track what books I've read. It appeals to the list-maker in me.
