30 Day Ashes to Ashes Meme! (Day 5)
Day 05 - Whatever Takes Your Fancy: Bulletproof ++ A Gene/Alex Fanmix by ohvienna.
I love good fanmixes, they're probably my favourite thing about fandom. As someone who's erm... rather predisposed to obsession, I like that you get to stay in the universe of the show even when you're not watching it. Plus, it makes songs all meaningful and feelings-inducing, which I like, while sometimes adding whole new layers to the characters and making you see things in a way you didn't before.
This fanmix in particular is brill!, as Shaz would say. I feel like 80s revival dance music (and maybe dance music in general?) has a very bittersweet quality that really ties in with the show and the songs chosen really highlight that for me. The first and the last tracks, Ladyhawke's Crazy World and Crystal Castle's Vanished, in particular have, to me, a fabulous nostalgic quality that makes me think of Alex's bereavement, the life and the people that she lost when she was shot and woke up in the 80s. So yeah, in term of the general feel of the thing, the tone of the songs is amazing and very, very fitting. They're also amazingly chosen because look at the lyrics! I'm not going to pick out the lyrics that I think are relevant and awesome in its significance because, really, they're all in the LJ post. I would recommend you to click on the picture and follow the link, read what ohvienna has to say about it and then download it and listen. And listen again and again. I was looking at the thing trying to pick favourites but I really think the whole story it's telling is amazing and OH GOD, I cannot be coherent. I love it, you should too! This fanmix was the perfect soundtrack to my obsessive Summer of 2009. :)
