This review also covers the color Blue for the
colorful reading book challenge I posted the following review of Blue Diablo at Amazon.com I did it because Ann Aguirre would like her fans to review the book on Amazon - so even though I swore to never buy anything from them again, I'll review there if it helps a writer; only reason.
Blue Diablo - I'll be looking for sequels, May 14, 2009

See all my reviewsI read Blue Diablo and was entertained by it. The main character, Corinne is a handler - she can see visions of events by touching certain objects, though she pays a price for her "gift" every time she uses it. There is past history that comes out in pieces throughout this book. Part of her history comes back to her in the form of an exboyfriend who comes to her for help to find his missing mother. Since she was very close to her ex's mother, she agrees to help, even though there is some painfully awkward moments in store for her and her ex. At first I was put off by some of the dialogue between the two (Corinne and Chance), but the sometimes bitter, sometimes angsty comments made to each other fits. If you were suddenly in touch with an ex, there would be some awkward conversation and verbal jabs - especially with unresolved emotional baggage.
But these two pull together to find Chance's mom. Along the way some interesting secondary characters become involved, and some unlikely alliances and friends are made. My favorites are a little dog, and a former convict (the hand of god) that Chance and Corinne had helped to put away. Corinne and friends deal with black magic attacks, human slave trafficking and of course lots of danger.
Corinne has to deal with metaphysical attacks, physical attacks and the threat of attacts (facing the man she helped put into prison) An unlikely group of people band together to help Corinne and Chance.
The book was well written. I was kept interested throughout the whole book. The secondary characters are people I hope to see more of in following books. I like the way pieces of Corinne's past came into view throughout the book. The ending was satisfying, while at the same time leaving me wanting to read more. What is going to happen in the future with the Hand of God? Will he be working with or against Corinne in the future. Will Corinne and Chance begin their relationship again? Who is going to keep the dog (Butch)? Chuch and Eva (the couple that Corinne and Chance stay with, who also help them) have offered true friendship to Corinne. Will she go back to Mexico or stay with Chuch and Eva, who also have mysterious pasts.
By the end of the book I was satisfied with the read and at the same time really looking forwar to more, so I could read more about all the other characters, as well as Corinne and Chance. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for something slightly different than the usual Urban Fantasy (which I enjoy) with superpowered females who can't keep friends.
