"He will have to stand or fall on his own to learn these lessons about life," "It is beyond my ability and I have to release him to God, praying that He will make sure that nothing happens to him that cannot be undone."

That's what the father of the guy in Nebraska said, the one who killed all those people in a shopping mall.

God will sort it out. That is the attitude by which this country will be dragged under. Sort of a bootstrapping, nouveau-christian mentality. (I say "nouveau" because old-school christians actually espoused helping their neighbors.) A lot of people are concerned that conservatives want to bring about the end times. I'm not as concerned about that, especially since I consider religion to be, in part, an expression of one's fear of death. I mean, yes, you might be interested in the rapture, but more likely that interest is outweighed by feelings of self-preservation.

If you have the belief that, "God has a plan for you," as I've heard stated by evangelical christians, then you might be tempted to go out into the world and take chances. And that's certainly not a bad thing. On the other hand, you can use that same attitude to wash your hands of the things you don't want to think about, and I think that's exactly how it's being used in this instance.
