bags

My upcoming travels comprise three legs. The second leg has two parts, the third leg has three parts. Each leg and each part is very different from the others. The journey continues when I return home in August and switch to a different form of self-exploration and challenge.

Back in January, before I'd started the intensive travel planning for Iceland, I was most excited about my plans for September, as vague as they were.
While I was researching Iceland, I was most excited about June and my travels in that country. As I planned each subsequent leg of my trip I was most excited about that leg.
The tricky part has been planning my luggage, as I'll need warm clothing for Iceland, rugged clothing for Norway, and light-weight, minimal clothing for Leg 3. I've ended up with a mid-size purse and large carry-on, a small backpack, and a large plastic canvas bag. The two large bags are awkward to move around. Why have I done this? Because I plan on disposing/consuming all of the clothing and food in the two large bags in Legs 1 and 2, disposing of them before Leg 3. Starting in leg 2-2, I will be travelling with 35L of baggage until the end 5 weeks later (although I might pick up a box on my last few days to carry a couple bottles of wine home). Since I'll be driving around Iceland, I don't need to be able to carry all my luggage very frequently. An awkward but happily and cheaply disposible suitcase is sufficient.

For the past week I have been visiting friends and family in Montreal and Ottawa, a portion of the trip that isn't included in any leg and wasn't much planned. I also hadn't considered the clothing I would need for this part of the trip, but since I have a full range to cover all parts of the trip, it wasn't an issue. The difficulty was in the way I had distributed items between my bags. These were packed as a test run to each leg of the trip. That large plastic canvas bag has most of the heavy stuff, but would be heavy regardless.

And so for that past week, while I've been enjoying unplanned time with friends and family, I've also been thinking about my transportation plans (trains, buses, planes) and looking forward to freeing myself of my heavy luggage. It won't quite be No - Baggage, but it'll be close enough from today's persepective.

(One cheat: Lisa - with whom I will be travelling around Iceland - will be bringing home my sleeping bag for me)
