At the age of nine, Marie had been making cookies with her aunt. Christmas had been approaching and in just two days time Marie and her Daddy would have the trailer to themselves. Aunt Carrie was heading to her own husbands family for the holiday. The day Carrie headed off, Marie presented her Daddy with the cookie that she had declared perfect. It had been the small pat on the head, the affectionate little clap of his hand on her hair and Marie's face lit up with a bright smile.

It was the last time she remembered giving her father the unrestrained show of affection.

At the age of sixteen, Marie sat under a tree by the edge of the swamp area, watching the stars and listening as Cody Robbins told her about the constellations. It was a gradual thing, but Marie ended up sitting pressed to his side, his arm around her waist while she watched where she directed. "But none of them are as pretty as you." It should've been corny and cheesy, but Marie grinned anyway, watching Cody with an easy smile and bubbly anticipation as he leaned in towards her.

She's mildly thankful that he remembered her smile as one of the best things to happen to him.

At the age of nineteen, having just graduated community college, Rogue had managed to convince Raven that it was for the best that she at least complete her education. Irene hadn't told her anything, not a single thing and Rogue was riding high on the thrill of having done it herself. With her diploma finally achieved, Raven caved and allowed Rogue along for a mission with the Brotherhood. The beaming grin hadn't come off her face until Rogue had managed to pull away from Carol Danvers' unresponsive body.

She'd left New York for three weeks directly afterwards.

Rogue met Julio Richter when she was twenty one. She smiled the first night they arrived in Africa, his easy nature making her relax in the new environment. She smiled when he dubbed her Ruby and stuck to it as a nickname despite it being nothing like her own. She smiled when he moved into her tent and didn't leave, keeping her company regardless of the rules. She smiled when he showed no fear of touching her, even knowing about her dangerous powers. She smiled when he joked with Fred and Bradley to distract attention from her clothing habits. She smiled when his inability to pack his stuff left her doing all the work when they moved camp. She smiled and nodded as he moped and moaned about 'the cocktail bar' that was walking around the camp. She smiled and listened when he lamented his woes about Creed and Stryker.

Rogue's twenty two when she realises that she's smiled more at Rictor than she has anyone else in her life. And while she's trying to reason that out, he tells a stupidly unfunny joke and she can't even stop herself from smiling at it and shaking her head.

Her adopted brother is a loon. But she loves him that way.
