It took fifteen minutes to finally make the decision and do it. Fifteen minutes of staring at her reflection, of looking at her hands, of reading over the instructions. It wasn't like the decision would change her life, not really. It was just a few weeks, unless she kept it up. It was just a test, just to see.
She knew she wasn't going to fit in, it wasn't an attempt to fit in. But maybe it would make her more mature, make Raven take her more seriously. Wasn't that what ever seventeen year old wanted? For their mother to just accept that they were a woman now? That they could take care of themselves?
Every seventeen year old probably wasn't trying to convince their mother that they were ready to partake in acts of international terrorism, but at the same time, it was about a coming of age type thing. Raven thought Marie should be worrying about prom, about her dress and her date -Gary was nice, really, but she really wasn't interested in pretending to be a regular girl any more. No, Rogue wanted to be with the Brotherhood, in Illinois doing whatever it was her mother didn't want her to do.
With her mind made up, Rogue uncapped the bottle, going over the instructions once again before quickly applying the formula to her bangs. Waiting the twenty minutes recommended, Rogue took her time heating up the shower to wash out her hair after the allotted time. As the dark suds started to wash down the drain, Rogue felt a flutter in her stomach before she turned back to washing out her hair, the long tendrils of wet sticking to her forehead and neck before she towelled them dry. She didn't bother straightening, just letting her hair sit around her shoulders, completely dark.
The stripe would be missed, her little skunk stripe, but at the same time, surely this would make her appear more mature, would make Raven look at her as the adult she was rather than the child she had been.
Raven didn't comment on her hair, although she did drop a glass when she saw it. Irene smiled wistfully when Rogue entered the kitchen the following morning when the incident occurred and Rogue figured that maybe Raven had already been warned. Rogue was allowed to miss her prom for a Brotherhood mission.
She let her stripes grow back in though.
