"WHy do you waste your time with him?"
Lily turned around to see James sitting in a chair, watching her. "Severus is my friend."
"Your friends call you Mudblood?"
She couldn't help the tears she'd been fighting spring to her eyes. "Sod off."
Instead James crossed the Common Room and awkwardly patted her back.
"He's been my friend - my best friend - since we were eight!"
She didn't expect James to care, since he'd never liked Severus, but to her suprise, he mumbled, "I'm sorry."
The back patting became a hug and James held Lily as she cried for her lost friend.
