Kyungsoo doesn’t like Wu Fan.

Kyungsoo is seven and Wu Fan is eight, but Wu Fan is several heads taller than him. In fact, Kyungsoo thinks he’s taller than anyone in their grade. ‘Giant’ is the first thing that pops into Kyungsoo’s mind when their teacher introduces Wu Fan to the class. Kyungsoo’s eyes widen at the thought, an involuntary gasp coming out of his mouth. He remembers his mother telling him the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and how the boy had made his daring escape from a giant who’d wanted to eat him.

”-sit beside Kyungsoo,” their teacher is saying and Kyungsoo’s jaw drops.

Wu Fan has his hands in his pockets and his eyes survey Kyungsoo coolly from his spot in front of the classroom. Kyungsoo closes his mouth. His heart stutters in his chest and he almost whimpers as the other boy walks to his desk. He doesn’t want to be giant food!

Wu Fan slides into the seat beside Kyungsoo’s and drums his fingertips on his desk.

Kyungsoo rubs his forearms and congratulates himself on not fainting. He pretends to look at his coloring book, but really, he’s just craning his neck trying to peer at his seatmate. What if Wu Fan tries to take a bite out of his shoulder or something? After all, his classmate, Jongin, had said it was nice and soft one time.

Wu Fan doesn’t seem to notice him. He takes out a pencil case and a notebook from the front pocket of his shiny black backpack.

Kyungsoo stares at Wu Fan’s large hands out of the corner of his eyes and nods to himself. Wu Fan is a giant and giants are mean, he thinks resolutely. Kyungsoo needs to keep watching him so that he can protect himself.

Wu Fan unzips his backpack further and out comes a white stuffed toy as big as Wu Fan’s hand. It looks like some sort of sheep. Kyungsoo’s eyes bug out and he bites his lower lip. The stuffed toy looks really cute and cuddly. (On his last birthday, Kyungsoo had bravely told his mom he didn’t like stuffed toys anymore, but actually he was lying.)

"It’s an alpaca," Wu Fan says.

Alpa-what? Kyungsoo pretends not to hear him, but his brows furrow in thought anyway.

"You know, like a llama."

What is he talking about? Kyungsoo decides right then and there that, aside from being a giant, Wu Fan is also an alien from outerspace.

Wu Fan makes a sound almost like a sigh. “It’s a sheep.”

Kyungsoo’s ears perk up and he can’t help giving Wu Fan a hopeful look.

Wu Fan stares at him. “Has anyone ever told you you have really big eyes?”

Kyungsoo definitely does not pout at that.

"What’s your name?" Wu Fan asks when Kyungsoo doesn’t answer. His tone is light and friendly and not at all what Kyungsoo expects from a giant.

"Kyungsoo," he offers reluctantly.

"I’m Wu Fan." The other boy grins, and Kyungsoo finds himself looking at Wu Fan’s gums and teeth. He has one tooth missing on his lower jaw. "This is Ace," Wu Fan continues, patting the stuffed toy’s head. "You want to borrow him?"

Kyungsoo can’t help it; his face lights up. “Y-yes, can I hold him?”

Wu Fan shrugs and gives up the stuffed toy easily. If Kyungsoo concentrates, he can almost forget how large Wu Fan’s hands are and how scary giants like to make meals out of people. “Thank you, Giant,” he mumbles, marveling at how soft the stuffed toy is. He mentally renames it Kris.

"Did you just call me a giant?" Wu Fan sounds baffled.

Kyungsoo hugs his little sheep close to his chest and decides maybe he likes Wu Fan after all.
