I feel like I ought to be writing something on the mess that is the Gaza situation, but just don't have the emotional energy to do so (or much of anything, really, it's kind of a problem) today, so instead, with one exception, you get other stuff, and I hope that it's obvious that my failure to write about the situation is in no way meant to minimize the suffering of the many people harmed by it.

Jews Against the Occupation might have some copyright infringement issues with this group of Jewish Canadian women occupying an Israeli consulate as a protest against the Gaza operation ;)....

From the American Association of University Women: As one of the first actions of the new 111th Congress, the House is expected to vote this week on both the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (H.R. 11) and the Paycheck Fairness Act (H.R. 12), providing a critical opportunity for Congress to make real progress on pay equity. The 2007 AAUW report Behind the Pay Gap shows that just one year out of college, women working full time already earn less than their male colleagues, even when they have the same major and occupation. Ten years after graduation, the pay gap widens. It is critical that stronger laws that more thoroughly address the wage gap be enacted. Specifically, AAUW urges the passage of both the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act; we also urge their passage as a package, as part of the first set of bills the new president signs into law. Passing both bills, in tandem, is critical to the overall goal of achieving pay equity for women: the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act rights the wrongs done by the Supreme Court, regaining ground we've lost and ensuring that people who've been discriminated against can seek vindication. The Paycheck Fairness Act is a comprehensive bill that would create stronger incentives for employers to follow the law as well as strengthen penalties for violations, strengthen federal outreach, education and enforcement efforts, and prohibit retaliation against workers who ask about employers' wage practices. Together, the bills can help create a climate where pay discrimination is not tolerated, and give the new administration the enforcement tools it needs to make real progress on pay equity.
Urge your representative to support the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act when they come up for a vote this week to ensure the change hard working Americans need to receive equal pay.

I'm unlikely to post for the next few days.  I'm going up to Haifa with my cousin, who was on a Birthr't trip and is extending her visit a few days to see some of the West Bank as well as the Bahai Gardens, for tomorrow and Saturday.  Then Saturday night I plan to go to a demo. in Tel Aviv, meet up with [Peachy Keen Grrl] there, and spend Sunday morning at Tel Aviv University before heading back to Beer Sheva in the afternoon.  All that is to say that there's no reason to worry that my internet silence means that something bad has happened.  Anyway, for now, that's all I've got.
