Schalke director Horst Heldt says Manuel Neuer will not be used to clear club's debts
Bundesliga side are in no rush to help goalkeeper leave despite being £176m in the red and with Bayern Munich still sniffing around German international
Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will not be used to help clear a substantial part of the club's £176m (€200m) plus debt, according to director Horst Heldt.
Neuer has been consistently linked with Bayern Munich, but Heldt said his future had little to do with the club's financial situation, despite plenty of selling points.
It seems Schalke are reluctant to lose the 25-year-old shot-stopper any time soon with Heldt suggesting a free transfer next summer would be more likely.
"There was a Schalke before Neuer and there will be Schalke after Neuer - when he leaves us in 2012," he told the press.
"I would say wait. I'm pretty relaxed. We're in the semi-finals of the Champions League and the final of the DFB-Pokal - not many clubs can say this about themselves right now. This season was not only a sporting success but also a financial one. Schalke has to do nothing."
Heldt confirmed debts of more than £176m (€200m), but stated Neuer is not the club's cash cow.
"Yes, I would let him go in 2012 for free. I don't know what could be an asking price for him. This is a topic I have never thought of so far," he added.
"I don't care if there was something with Bayern and Neuer, if there is an agreement. Fact is, we have a contract with him and all parties should respect this.
"Before the World Cup the club missed the chance to give him a longer deal. [Ralf] Rangnick, [Felix] Magath and myself tried everything in the last year to hold him.
"Before asking Bayern, there are other methods," he concluded, referring to a sale to raise funds which may help balance the club's accounts.
