Livejournal is a place full of fandoms. Because of this, we decided to look for people who could help us out with our project over here.
We’re 4 university students working on an English project. Our university is having a week dedicated to languages and since we’re from the first year of Applied Languages, we’re going to play a part in it.
Our presentation will happen on the day dedicated to Cyber English, 11th April. We’re going to explore fandoms/fan bases and talk about the kind of language used in them. We’re also going to be talking about original fiction/fan fiction and how it helps people develop their creativity/reading/writing skills.
We would like to be able to link to some comments in some stories, as well as we’d love to have some of the writers talk about how their writing improved (or not) and how the feedback does or doesn’t help improving as well. If some of the readers want to tell us about how it improves their reading skills or, in case of those who don’t have English as a first language, how it helped develop their vocabulary, for example.
The questions will be divided into 3 parts: fandom, writers and readers. You can choose if you want to answer to all the 3 subjects or if you only want to answer to one or two of them.
We’ll be collecting the answers for our project until Thursday, around 2 pm (GMT). We may do this a bit later, since we’ll be working on it later at night and we’re also aware of the different time zones, so you can still submit your answers until 8 pm (GMT).
We won’t be mentioning names and the authors/reviewers that give us permission to use their story/review will have anonymity, if requested. All the other data will be used for statistics and general answers, so there won’t be names/usernames in our project; only the answers, in a global scheme.
If you want to participate, you only have to post a comment answering our following questions (We know there are a lot of questions, but the answers probably won’t be that long. Also, feel free to skip questions, if you want.):
Fandom
1. Where did you first hear about fandom?
2. How did you get in contact with a fandom for the first time?
3. What made you want to be part of one?
4. Are you an active member or do you follow from a distance?
5. If you’re an active member, how and why do you participate actively in a fandom?
6. If you’re not an active member, why don’t you feel the need to participate?
7. Why do you think fandoms use specific language or even create new words to be used within it?
8. Do you use caps lock when you comment on something related to the fandom? If so, when and why do you use it?
9. Do you think the language used in fandoms is too formal sometimes? Why?
10. Does the language used improve or harm the way you speak/write outside the fandom?
Writers
11. Do you write original fiction, fan fiction or both?
12. Which one do you prefer writing?
13. Do you easily find inspiration to write?
14. Does writing improve your creativity?
15. Do you have someone revising your work?
16. Do you think it's important to have someone proofread your written material before you publish it? Why/why not?
17. Do you read the feedback you receive?
18. Does it help you improve your writing skills?
19. How does this kind of writing influence all the other writing you do beyond the fictional stories?
20. What do you think of the requirements you need to meet in order to publish a story? Are they too much, are they not enough or are they just right?
21. Are you familiar with the different ratings?
22. Do you think they cover every situation or do you find yourself wondering which rating you should use for your story?
Readers and/or Proofreaders (Beta readers)
23. Do you read original fiction, fan fiction or both?
24. Which one do you prefer?
25. Does it improve your reading skills?
26. Does it widen your vocabulary?
27. Do you proofread other people’s work?
28. If so, what do you look for when you proofread and how do you fix it/ suggest a solution?
29. Do you usually leave comments on the things you read?
30. A good reviewer needs some skills, like honesty, great vocabulary, good knowledge of the fandom (if they're proofreading a fan fiction) and a good knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation. Which ones do you think are more important?
31. What kind of feedback do you usually give?
32. Are you honest when it comes to correcting mistakes/commenting on a story?
33. When you give feedback, do you usually get a response to it? If so, what kind of things do you hear from the writer?
We’d like to thank you for the time you took to answer all these questions. We will keep you updated on the status of our assignment.
