V. M. Respectable reflects on squirrels

Today I saw a squirrel die. It may or may not surprise you to learn that I was not pleased. Such is my macabre sense of humor that perhaps it does not seem that way, but I am very sensitive to these things. The squirrel was crossing the street and was not quite as fast as it thought it was, and got whipped around by a car's rear tire. By the way it twisted and flopped as it was kicked up, I imagined its spine and probably neck were snapped instantly, and that it had very definitely become a non-squirrel. But a moment later there was perhaps a draft from a passing car that made it seem to be scrabbling around without the use of its hind legs, but then it lay supremely still again so I suppose it must have been just the draft. I certainly hope it was just the draft.

The squirrel was just about in the middle of the lane, which reflects poorly on the driving habits of the car that did the squirrel in. If the guy hadn't imagined that both lanes belonged to him, perhaps the squirrel might still live? I don't know.

It must have been a fairly young squirrel, because it was smaller than the car. Squirrels around here live to ripe old ages and become quite plump, and in their prime they can menace dogs, racoons and large cats.
