Yesterday the festivities continued with a big merengue concert in the park, which was also packed with billions of people. I got there before they started, and there was a little band of guys launching these little candle powered hot air balloons. For each one they would have to run under it and fan it to get it barely moving up but once they started up they took off like little rockets and would disappear into a dot in a couple minutes. One went out and somehow floated all the way back down to within 20 feet of where it was launched. Then they started shooting off more bomb type fireworks in the sky from their little mortars to announce the concert was about to begin. At one point I think they were trying to shoot down a balloon with the fireworks.

As a note - these fireworks are serious business. I walked home when it started to rain and they were still launching these fireworks, and every time one went off, car alarms would start beeping warnings all around, even when I was across the city.

The weather has been getting more and more erratic. Yesterday it was cool in the morning. Then it was burning hot by noon and early afternoon when I start classes. In the middle of the lesson, it started pouring HAIL. Then it cleared up and was nice again till the concert, halfway through when it started raining with lots of thunder and lightning. I'm used to either "sunny for days" or "rainy for days" or "always snowy".
