I struggle coming up with a subject since I forget everything I do. There was also a football game Thursday which we lost. But yesterday was a Halloween party at Andy and Savanna Carr's house. I decided to cop out and be Rivers Cuomo from Weezer, because we've both got classes and I just took one of Fisher's sweaters. It was good times. I'm not gonna list everyone, but some highlights were Carly as a bunch of grapes, Lauren as Charlie Chaplin (my personal favorite), and the Jerk as "your mom". In other words he dressed like an old, fat woman. I brought The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra so everyone got to enjoy the hilarity that is that movie. Then today was church, lunch at Topper, finishing part 3 of my webhosting mid-term, and then Ted Van Zee agreed to go to a movie. On the way there, I discovered that he had never heard of the movie and just wanted something to do. It's very risky for people to go to the movies I enjoy (generally), so I salute Ted for having the bravery and lack of things to do to be able to go to Stay which I'll get to now...:
Branded to Kill-Seijun Suzuki Criterion that's crazy! Apparently Japan's hitmen are all numbered according to their skill level. The #3 is hired to protect someone and kills the #2, and #4 is always chasing after him. In the meantime, #3 is having lots of sex with someone woman during the first half of the movie, and she dies so he becomes obsessed with killing #1 (who's also trying to kill him). No clue, it's just a very crazy movie. Check it out.
Layer Cake-British gangster film starring the new 007! It was alright. Hard to understand them half the time due to volume and accents, but it was okay.
North Country-Charlize Theron as a miner fighting for equal rights! Some of it was very cliche, but the parts that weren't were awesome. Ebert gave it four stars, so you should probably watch it.
High and Low-Kurosawa gendai-geki Criterion! When it started, it seemed very much like an Ozu film which I was not in the mood for. But when the kid gets kidnapped, I knew it was a Kurosawa film. Pretty darn good, and the shots featuring the bad guy in sunglasses and Dope Alley are amazing. Watch it.
Lolita-Kubrick based on an awesome book! The first time I saw this movie, I wasn't very impressed. But this time having read the book (which was awesome) it was much more enjoyable. Also, my movie-reading skills have gotten better which also made the film more enjoyable. So if you like stories about grown men falling in love with 12 year old girls, then this is for you I guess. But you should read the book which is probably better.
The Browning Version-random Criterion! I had no clue what this was about until I got it. But it was pretty good. A schoolteacher (boarding school kind) is retiring and everyone hates him except for one student pretty much. Seemed kind of like a late 50's Bergman film, but in English.
The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra-still hilarious! If you haven't seen this movie before, let me know and I'll arrange a viewing or something. It's so funny. And now people in Bowling Green have finally seen it. And apparently with this movie, my status of movie choices has been redeemed in the eyes of Savanna. I personally thought everything I made them watch is golden, but whatever.
Happy Together-Wong Kar-Wei film about a gay couple! I love how approximately 3% of people I know would watch this movie. The trials and tribulations of a couple who spent all their money while in a foreign country (Argentina). Very stylistic, as are the majority of Kar-Wei's early films from what I gather (the only other one I've seen is Fallen Angels). It's at the library, so check it out.
Stay-trippy movie! A pretty good movie, but I do have some problems with it. I don't want to give anything away so I'll not go into details here, but feel free to message me about what I'm talking about or check James' journal since I'll probably mention it there. I recommend that everyone sees it though because I like the idea of my friends going to see a "Jacob movie" (yeah, it's a phrase now) in the theaters.
I just saw a commercial for Zathura on TV. There using the music from Requiem for a Dream! No! That soundtrack is pretty much sacred. You can't rip it off unless it's something also very good (like Return of the King doing it in their commercials). In summary, the Kronos Quartet is awesome. Jarhead next Sunday! And The New World and Rent very soon also! I love this time of year!
