Driving home from Jason's house last night, my iPod randomized The Funeral by The Arcade Fire. Awesomeness, naturally, but it got me to thinking:
In pop culture terms, what is the value of Canada?
ProsConsTotalsMusicArcade Fire: +2 (they're just THAT awesome)
Our Lady Peace: +1
Jagged Little Pill Alanis: +1Nickelback: -1
Celine Dion: -3 (Because let's face it - she's just THAT annoying)
Shania Twain: -1
Post-JLP Alanis: -1-2SportsHockey (for violence and general badassery): +1Curling (for all around stupidity and lack of any athletic skill): -10TelevisionSlings & Arrows: +3 (as it's just about the greatest thing ever)
The Tudors is co-produced by a Canadian company.: +1
Stargate: SG-1 filmed in Vancouver, so that gets a +1Kids in the Hall: (I just think they are a poor man's Monty Python) -1+4MoviesI've only seen one Canadian movie. It was okay, so it's a push, there.
BUT, Canada gave us Ryan Reynolds and Nathan Fillion: +4 (points each for awesomeness and hotness) +4LiteratureThe Anne of Green Gables series was always fun.: +1
The Wars by Timothy Findley was pretty horrifying, but it was good.: +1
Wolverine is Canadian. Booyah: +1The Call of the Wild traumatized me as a child. I'm talking nightmares and hating humanity for what happens to that dog. -5-2WeatherIt's clean, and there's lots of pretty scenery. +2It's bloody COLD.: -2
Did I mention there's snow? Lots of snow.: -2-2PoliticsSocialized healthcare for all my men! +1New prime minister really liked Bush: -10Totals+19-17+2
So, when you break it down scientifically, you can clearly see that Canada has a Pop Culture Quotient of +2, despite inflicting Celine Dion on the world and being damn cold the majority of the year.
