15,001, and I'm transporting my novel to 1996. I blame all the nostalgic mid-90s post-grunge pop rock that has been eating my brain lately. Who knew the Gin Blossoms, Collective Soul, and Better Than Ezra could unlock my literary muse? Also, I'm thinking about heading each chapter with a quote from a song from the era. For IZE, think classics from the FM106.3 vault.
The more this novel goes along, it seems to be as much a love letter to the music of my middle school years as it is a coming of age character study. Now I just need to find shit for my characters to do. Our little guide book says I should have 20,000 words by the end of the week. I have a decent chance if I kick my ass a bit the next three days.
The Chieftains tomorrow! I'm really excited.
Oh, and I did see The Watchmen. About par for how I felt about the book: eh. I didn't really like it, but I didn't hate it, either. It was pretty to look at and the Kracken was exorcised, much to my delight, but I missed the pirate comic and I still didn't give a damn about the outcome of the story or the fates of the characters. Also, I found the pop songs they used in the film incredibly distracting, especially Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". I do agree that Billy Crudup has an wonderful voice, though. He should do audiobooks in Dr. Manhattan's voice.
