Twilight was a bad movie

Apr 05, 2009 02:06

...and other thoughts.

I think Twilight might have benefited from a better writer, a different director, some new casting, and less extreme Edward hair. Mostly the characters seemed deprived of both personality and backstory, and the big romance was lacking chemistry. Spark. Romance. He glitters like jewelry for #*$%'s sake. How bad a writer or ( Read more... )

the lag between obsessions makes for many money-better-spent thoughts

This is one of the reasons I still haven't joined the netflix crowd. Granted, there is much I could start with, but I always look long term when spending money like this. What happens after I watch all the stuff I am excited over? And of course, I have no time anyway and more than enough backlog of my own - I see wasted monthly fees after the initial OOO AAHH SHINY. Also, your comment about the pan outshining Twilight makes me giggle with Glee.

ALSO: get out of my brain! Yesterday I was at the grocery store and popped over to the movie cube rental thingie (was checking on Rachel Getting Married - naturally it was out; it was still early on Sat morning after all) and I saw that Twilight was in. For a brief and shining(?) second I considered it, because if I'm ever to experience the franchise, I promise you all it will be the movies and not the books (there is no way I'd get thru that purple prose, ugh) and the movie cube is so stupidly cheap that I don't even feel bitter about renting bad movies from it .... but it took merely a second for that mistake in judgement ot pass. THANK GOODNESS.

(I watched my much-beloved copy of Newsies instead. No doubt a better use of 2 hrs.)

ALSO CHUCK. Someone else is watching this? YAY!!!! I love Chuck. So much. And now I love YOU. I'm here for you if you ever need to talk Chuck. <3

I'm having a really bad time with Netflix right now. Some anime series (notably Detective Conan) just fell out of my regular queue into the saved queue, which means the disks have gone missing or been purged from their collection...and they'll never be replaced. I haven't been able to get GTO or Marmalade Boy from them for that reason. My top three disks -- Slumdog and the second set of Ouran DVDs -- are all marked with "long wait." But then there's Avatar and Chuck and, yes, even Twilight (which I wanted to watch so I could watch that Bollywood thing w_10_00 linked). Also, you say "Newsies," and I can just add it to my queue.

I seriously love the middle of the first season of Chuck, which is why I won't let those disks go. The Halloween episode! Mother's Day! (Chuck has more chemistry -- human, not romantic -- with his sister than any two characters in Twilight. So *spoilery comments about last week's ep removed*. Heartbreak for me!)

...could it be, that you have *gasp* never seen Newsies? Please tell me I am misreading your comment!

Also, you HAVE seen Strictly Ballroom, haven't you?

If you are ever desperate for Marmalade Boy, I would be happy to share my dvds with you. I haven't even undone the skrinkwrap on them, ha ha! (I've seen the show, though.. just haven't gotten around to rewatching via dvd.) I would be more than happy to give them a use until I am ready. ;)

So.. you must be current on Chuck, then, to have commented on last weeks episode? My friend from home is the only other person I know who watches Chuck and I am desperate to be able to look at someone before tomorrow and GLEEFULLY say: "OMG SCOTT BACULA IS GOING TO BE PERFECT!"

Also, I seriously disliked the actress who plays Chuck's sister in a previous series (not that I was all that hot on the show itself anyway), but she has warmed a great deal to me in this one. But oh, the ways I love Chuck, I could talk all day.

.....Of course I meant Scott Bakula.

I have seen Strictly Ballroom. In fact, I have it on VHS. Oh, VHS, how you amuse us now. I have also seen Newsies, I just don't remember it being Strictly Ballroom awesome. Knowing you like it, I want to give it another try.

I may take you up on your Marmalade Boy offer someday. There are two fansubbed series I haven't replaced with legitimate copies (MB and FY), and I need to see the commercial versions before making that decision.

I'm thinking OMG! SCOTT BAKULA IS GOING TO BE THE FATHER OF AN ADULT. I am so old. But mostly I need to see the sibling relationship repaired. Now I have to look up what series she was in before.

I was pretty sure I knew you'd seen Strictly Ballroom; I think it came up in conversation one time, but I had to be sure. Just as an FYI, I wasn't correlating the two movies, but for some reason, I'd been thinking about SB lately so I mentioned it. I've also been thinking of Lost in Translation. Seriously? It's a trifecta that makes not one bit of sense. (I guess Newsies and SB could be tied together by the thinest thread of dancing, but LiT ..?)

Knowing you like it, I want to give it another try.
I am both grateful and fearful at your proclamation. I hope you do not become disillusioned with me. I have a terrible soft spot for Newsies. And movies with singing in them. And Christian Bale. And tough, orphaned boys. And...

OMG! SCOTT BAKULA IS GOING TO BE THE FATHER OF AN ADULT
I was trying not to think about that, you know. I'd pretty much forgotten about it until now. THANKS. :9 (Though he was always a *little* old for me anyway, but that doesn't mean I love him any less.) I also recently had a "moment" when I saw the cover of a later Stargate boxset with Richard Dean Anderson on it.

LOL! I've just started renting Avatar and when I'm done, I'm going to drop our subscription. It's been 10 years and the kids are all grown now, so we don't need it anymore.

There are several good brands of cookware out there. We get "points" from the credit card for using it. I'll see what the allclad there costs if you're interested.

Yay, Avatar! If you want to talk about it and don't want to expose your inner 13-year-old in your journal, do come chat about it in mine. Or email me. I want to make it clear that I am always ready to talk about Avatar, good or bad.

I think it's funny (and a bit sad for Netflix) that there's this whole Netflix downsizing/cancelling theme in this thread. The great anti-rental convergence.

Cory recommended Allclad's stainless steel sets or Calphalon's anodized aluminum sets (currently known to me as very pricey and slightly less pricey but nowhere near as shiny). If you have any other recommendations for resilient cookware, please let me know. I kind of glommed on Allclad because I do have their teaser 1-qt saucepan and love it.

My main concern with Avatar is it will sit and I won't actually watch it. Hmm, I wonder how it will be on fast forward?

Netflix is a great service, it's just one I don't think I'll need much any more.

I'll think about brands, but really, AllClad is very nice.

Check out this month's Cooks Illustrated magazine next time you are near a magazine rack. They adore All Clad, but found something nearly as good for very, very cheap called ... Tramontino(?). Only available from Walmart ...

I'd mail you the mag, only I want to keep the chocolate chip cookie article in it. I think you may be able to find the article online, too.
