Secret Base
Japanese TitleHimitsu kichi (ひみつきち)
MangakaNAKAHARA Aya
My scanner is broken, so the Japanese cover should do for now. This one book of manga has 4 short stories.
Summary
It started with File #2 - His Secret (yes, our Indonesian
editor was probably sleeping). Kana is a freshmen in high school or year 10 in some places, and she falls in love with a guy who regularly visits a cafe near her house. The name of the cafe? "Prince" Coffee House. *giggles*
He is tall, looks mature, drinks black coffee and is often found reading books. However, two days after confessing her feelings for him, Kana sees him walking on the street wearing a
backpack!! No way! (If you don't understand Kana's feeling, you might want to check the link I provided.)
Ever since, she dreaded the day when her friends find out her new boyfriend's secret!
The real File #2 - My Secret opens with a scene where the
ever-manly Hiroko Haruka rescues Jun Kotake from being bullied. Since then,
Kotake follows her around and even finds out that she likes her fellow class mate, model-and-actor, Takuto Yoshinaga. Or YoshiTaku for short.
Will she ever confess to YoshiTaku? And what secret does Jun has?
An out-of-this-world song opens File #3 - Secret of My Friend's
Girlfriend, sung by the cute Seiji Uehara. He meets Eri at one of their live street performance, and she was already in tears when she told him that his singing is very moving. He instantly falls for her but is broken-hearted the next second when her boyfriend calls her. Her boyfriend is Katagiri, his fellow band member.
While murmuring how Katagiri should be dead or cursed, Seiji runs into Eri once again. Their sudden meeting was interrupted with rain and then Seiji finds out her secret! A secret that made the panel that holds his scream takes half of the manga page! And it will probably ends Katagiri and Eri's relationship.
So, will Seiji tell Katagiri?
Separated by 3 years, the last file was out in 2004. File #4 - My
Secret: About Dad. KAWASHIMA Emi has an embarrassing comedian father named KAWASHIMA Afro. Yes, he has the hair. So embarrassing that when they moved from Osaka to Tokyo, he tried everything to conceal that fact. But one day, his father shows up at school to deliver his packed lunch.
And Emi really wants to dissappear from the face of the earth!
Review
Do I need to say more? Buy the book! Pronto! Excluding file #4, it's the usual boy-girl relationship with a spice of weird plot-twist along with those
insanely defined-characters! You'll laugh, cry, and even feel pity, this is a good crack for your weekend.
Body Shock
Japanese TitleBody Shokku (BODYショック)
MangakaMIDORI Yukako
It's easier to find the manga-ka's picture than the cover for this manga!
Summary
KURAMOTO Nao's head hit a wall after she was sideswiped by a car and she
passed out. During that moment, she had an out-of-body experience. Her soul saw a high school boy taking her bag. At first, she thought it was a dream, but apparently, it's not.
In the bag was all her allowance money for the summer. That being said, she
has to take a part-time job at a vet clinic to cover for her expenses. It was a tough job, but 3-generations of guys in the clinic make sure her part-time job is worth every second. The demanding Dr. Fujimura senior and the equally-demanding-yet-uber-sexy Dr. Fujimura junior (referred as Toshiomi throughout the book) as well as the cute little Yu.
Nao's supernatural ability made her head spin, but the power enables her to help other people. She was able to locate Yu and tell Dr. Toshiomi, when Yu
was missing; and she also helped find Nishizaki's pet. There are times when
she wished her ability would not trip her into unfortunate events, like the
time she was worried over Yu and arrived at Toshiomi's bathroom instead! With him inside, bathing Yu! Oh, how will she ever manage to show up tomorrow?
Review
This is very good for just-another-shojo-manga! I mean the setting is unique (vet clinic), it was also good to build a story around the supernatural elements, and then add that up with cute guys and pets everywhere. Real treat for my eyes.
However, when I flip to the last page, I was like: NOOOOOOOOO! Why did it ends there? I need more of this story! Which is why I wouldn't recommend this one for those who dislike un-concluded stories. After all the flirting with Dr. Toshiomi and the effort to put Nishizaki somewhere in the story line, it ends there? I need someone to tell me if there are more of this story.
The Indonesian edition was printed like the printer was running out of ink.
Many pages lost its detail and it feels like reading through a pirated book! It was issued on February 2007 and IINM, all books printed during this month from the same publisher shared the same fate.
