My deepest apologies for the drought. The Daily Manflesh will now resume it's previous role in society.
As I mentioned in my first pronouncement, this agglomeration would address certain other aspects of society aside from cannibalism. After about eight minutes of careful consideration, I realized yet another fault of society.
Medical studies claim that depression is at an all time high. Let's do a quick comparison of today to the Dark Ages. We have refrigerators to keep our abundancy of food at a safe temperature. We have medicine and soap to not only raise our life expectancy but also our enjoyment of life. We have useless technology so we can keep in touch with our friends and remain entertained. We have warm houses, a fair assurance of safety and a good value of life. What did the Dark ages have? A twenty to thirty year life expectancy, some bread every few days, no leisure time to live and not enough work to survive. Why is it that depression is now at it's all time high? The answer is simple.
Each generation is twice as spoiled as the last. The basic life struggles our grandparents endured are now catastrophic events to us. Depression itself is not nearly as high as it once was, we just think it is because we do not know what depression is. Real depression is less common than Miss New York tells us. It is caused by truly hopeless situations or genetic defects. In all honesty, these individuals deserve our attention and assurance more than anyone. Humans are closer to perfection than we'd like to think. The ability to adapt and recover makes our species more powerful than we can imagine. While adapting to change, countless individuals enter a state of sadness. This is perfectly normal, an emotion everyone is entitled to. Some, however, cross the lines of sadness and declare themselves depressed. Unlike a depressed person, these people almost brag about it. As a result, we find ourselves spending our attention on them, rather than those who truly need help. The world market of attention, an exchange far more valuable than goods or cash, is in the direction of a devastating inbalance. If society continues in this direction, future generations will bring about a Great Depression. Every last human being will consider themselves depressed, the real depressed people will be neglected absolutely critical attention and we won't even realize it.
To those of you who are depressed, do not hesitate to get the attention you need.
To those of you who are sad, your friends will always be here for you.
To those of you who think you are depressed, for the sake of mankind's future, realize that you have the ability to adapt. Nothing is as bad as it looks. You don't need doctors or medication. You don't need to see a psychiatrist ever week because your boyfriend dumped you. You'll be able to get by with your friends.
"Depression is on the rise."
In conclusion, I think it's safe to say that depression is not getting more and more common. Mankind is simply getting more and more stupid.
