Bozeman is a fascinating mix of modern and rustic, town and country. One moment you’re walking by the high-tech hospital, but step behind it and you’re suddenly in someone’s crops, wondering how to get around the cow.
Speaking of Town & Country, I was just there buying groceries and was delighted to hear a Scottish accent from the cashier behind me. Once her line emptied out, I stepped over to share that I’d attended uni in Edinburgh, then asked where she was from. She shook her head and replied, “Across the pond.” At first I was like, er, Ireland? Because ‘across the pond’ from anywhere in Europe usually means America. And America is where she is from! She told me she had a traumatic brain injury five years ago and the accent stuck. She was born and raised in Bozeman and now sounds like she’s in the cast of Outlander.
At that point, having accidentally forced a stranger to disclose her medical trauma, I became as awkward as I had been with the cow I encountered on my stroll. With the cow, I think I said hello and probably a polite “Pardon me” as I moseyed past her haunches. With the cashier, I stammered that it was a beautiful accent. And then I moseyed away past her haunches.
