I'm currently reading Open a World of Possible, edited by Lois Bridges.
It's a collection of stories about the joy and power of reading. My friend Peta lent it to me (she wants this book back! - usually she passes on books she's read but doesn't want to keep). I'm thoroughly enjoying reading people's stories about being a reader. Not all of them could read before they started school. Many only had access to books in libraries. Many, many were not engaged with 'Dick and Jane', and quite a few got into trouble for turning the pages ahead of the rest of the class - yes, that happened to me.
Franki Sibberson's story about working with 4th and 5th graders and helping them know themselves as readers by getting them to write 100 things about themselves as readers really struck a chord with me. She's doing the same - none have reached 100 yet, but the plan is to keep adding to the list and see how far they get in a year.
She has 31 things listed here, starting with 1. I read almost every Nancy Drew book when I was in 6th grade. My grandmother had the collection in her attic. I can relate to this one 29. I buy too many books.
Here are mine, which I'll keep adding to as I think of them:
1. Books are your friends. (My mum repeated this to me from the time I was born)
2. There is no such thing as too many books.
3. I'd rather buy books than clothes.
4. I'm a sucker for the series factor.
5. Reading Enid Blyton won me a scholarship to a private school.
6. I buy picture books for myself on the pretext they're for my grandchildren.
tbc!
