[There is a pause before the message comes, a silence of dead air in which anyone could think that no message is coming. A faint sigh does follow, however, and finally Commander Shepard's low voice, with nothing jovial about the tone, though he makes sure not to let his unhappiness seep into it either. He keeps his voice controlled, careful, even if he feels sick to his stomach.]
For any who knew him, Major Kaidan Alenko has returned home. [There's a beat in which the Commander swallows a knot in his throat.]
This will not affect Alliance structure. Effective immediately, I will assume senior rank in Kaidan's place. Upon his possible return, or the arrival of senior Alliance officers, I will relinquish this position to my commanding officer.
[He frowns and it can certainly be heard in his voice.] Lieutenant Kerrigan, if you have time, I'd like to speak with you.
