So, it took me a long time to love Sufjan. Everyone else caught the Sufjan bug, but I never got into his music. I did really dig the cover of "Holy, Holy, Holy," which is one of my favorite church songs, but other than that, most of his songs just kind of got on my nerves.

Then I heard this song:

Chicago is one of my favourite songs. That's a neat live version, too.

I've got a few recommendations for you, and if you check these songs out you will surely start loving Sufjan. Yeah, the song titles are slightly pretentious, but I love the banjos and handclaps and horns in his songs.

"For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti"
"All the Trees of the Field Will Clap Their Hands"
"Casimir Pulaski Day"
"Decatur (or, Round of Applause for Your Stepmother!"
"Jacksonville"

You should listen to his Greetings from Michigan cd. I can cry most of the way through that thing. Lyrical brilliance.

omg....how can you not love him? Yes, he does take time to grow on you but once he's taken root, it's a beautiful thing.

Two other tunes worth checking out from his Illinoise CD:
The Tallest Man, The Broadest Shoulders
Come On Feel the Illinoise (extremely catchy!)

He plays all his own instruments.

Twenty-seven of them.

Fo' reals. How can you not love a man intelligent enough to learn to play all of those? :)

I love, love, loves me some Sufjan. Chicago was the song that got me into him and I love both the Michigan and Illinois CD, but it's Seven Swans that has become my favorite. To Be Alone With You is amazing... Such lyrical beauty!
