Life, The Universe, and Everything

I have geek children. Its our fault.

Yesterday was a bit of a panic day when I got a call at work from Brighid's school, asking if she was coming to school today. My response was "she isn't at school? let me call you right back" Padraic, who was at home with the kids and normally takes her to school in the morning when I start work at 6am, was not answering his cellphone.

My twenty five minute commute was cut to fifteen as I rushed home.

Luckily, it was merely that Padraic apparently didn't wake up and the kids were just quietly playing in their room. Since this wasn't a disaster and didn't involve blood, I just got the girl dressed, hair brushed and teeth brushed, lunch packed and brought her to school. After dropping her off at class, I stopped to admire some of the work that they had posted out on the boards in front of her classroom.

One of the posters caught my eye. I suspect it was a lesson on pre-math skills, as the question on the top was "How much does a watermelon weigh?" Each child in her class apparently wrote a number, and his/her name next to it. Most numbers that were on the board are those you would expect from a five year old, numbers of single digits, or those of really large value (100 and 200 were seemingly popular). Next to my daughter's neatly written name however, was the number 42.

I could do nothing else but laugh, and call Padraic to share the joke. You see, the Hitchhikers Guide is a current favorite of both my children.
