Kitty Kitty

On Monday, I had been prepared to have my dear, elderly cat put down but instead, the vet never suggested it. The pessimist in me wonders if it is because there's not as much money in euthanizing a pet, but more money in prolonging its life. Then again, I've known this vet for ages and believe him to be the type to act in his patients' best interests.

Claws has made improvements since we found her unwell on Thursday evening. She's still not walking, but she's gotten so that she can sit up more steadily. She seems to be in good spirits and gives no indication of being in pain.

I called the vet today to find out the results for Claws' blood test. The vet told me that the tests revealed that there is nothing horribly wrong with her. On one hand, that is certainly a relief but on the other hand, it was disappointing not to discover a specific reason for her inability to walk.

Due to her inability to get to or into a litter box, she's currently residing in a rigid, yellow, plastic kiddy pool in my dining room. This serves several purposes: she cannot crawl away somewhere and possibly get underfoot in a dark house, and the floor is protected. I picked up some puppy piddle pads to put under her rather than continue using newspapers. They get changed 2-4 times a day as needed. She has a food dish, an automatic waterer and a towel for a blanket.

She seems comfortable and content. Earlier when I went to pick her up to put her out on the living room floor for kitty physical therapy, she sat up and seemed eager for the attention. She seemed pretty content in the living room as Chris and I doted over her. I combed her fur and fed her kitty treats. Her purrs were deafening.

I had to give Chris a quick lesson on her upkeep because I'll be away from home tomorrow night. We stayed home from a friend's Halloween party tonight to nurse Claws, but tomorrow I'll be away but Chris will be at home. I have a gerontology related conference to go to on Friday and I made a deal with my one professor to arrange it so that I would get into the conference for free. I didn't feel like paying the $35 fee for students and made a deal that if I drive the school van for the other students who are going, that the professor will pay for my ticket. I'll save wear and tear on my car and $35. It seemed like a good deal at the time. Now, I am worried about my cat and a little paranoid about driving the van.

Claws is continually improving. Happily, she finally starting moving her bowels on her own and I haven't had to resort to using the little kitty enemas that the vet had sold to me. I'm glad. I love her, but that would not have been fun for either of us. Still, it amuses me that the enemas are called "Enemeez," which is what my cat and I would become if I had to flush her out.
