Ever drink or eat something right after you brush your teeth, and wince at how disgusting it tastes? Orange juice, for example. You brush your teeth, and there's something about the first drop of orange juice that hits your mouth afterwards that just makes you grimace as if you were sucking on eggs?
I though recently, what if that "thing" is the actual taste of the orange juice? Since we coudlnt' possibly know what orange juice tastes like when our mouths are dirty (enough to necessitate brushing), why would we doubt what the taste in our mouth is when it's (supposedly) clean?
