so starbucks

i went through a not so bad orintation in syosset yesterday. I got a run down of the history of the company, the companies mission statment, and the good thigns it does for it's employees and coffee farmers. I know some of you are goign to shoot it down and say they lie since they're an internaitonal corporation, yet they actaully treat the farmers well. they pay top prices for the coffee, build schools and hospitals for the farmers, and encourage eviormentally sound methods (one way they do this is by giving the farmer more money if they grow in an enviormentally sound fashion) Two things that suprised me about yesterday is how they reat their employees and that they're aware of thier image. THe company is aware that the image of the barrista is a prick. It's wokring to activily change that, since that's jsut bad buisness adn is adopting a customer is right attitude. THe idea is devlope what they call the third place. If home is 1st place, and school/work is 2nd place, they want starbucks ot be the 3rd place you go. A place you can go and relax, where you're greeted and treated nicley by the barrista, and basically make going to get a starbucks coffee a highly enjoyable experience. No on how they treat thier employees is intersting and form here on i'm usign their term whihc is partner. Eveeryone in starbucks is considered a partner. The hiring process is hihgly selective becuase they think any barrista they higher should have the potential to become a manager, and they won't higher someone if they don't think that. The company is still in a growing process. It right now has ~10,000 stores world wide, and its goal is 20,000 world wide. THe company not prefers to higher form inside the company, and within three years it is possiable to become a store manager. now for two list things you're more likely to read

the benefits i get workign there:
- 30% off everything in the store
- healthcare that is really good
- a free pound of coffee or box of tea every week
- easily able to get promoted within the company
- stock options with purchasing at lower than market value
- a pin if i taste every type of coffee the comapny offers stating i'm a coffee master

intersting things about coffee and tea
- never store coffe in the fridge. the humidity in the fridge takes away the flavor of the coffee. coffee and tea should be stored in a cool, dry place. a pantry or cubbard is ideal.
- the ideal brewing time for tea is as follow: green and white tea. no less than 3 but not more than 5 minutes. for every other type (oolong, black, herbal infusion) the ideal brewing time is 5 minutes.
- every other company sells it's coffee stale. This is to prvent the CO2 from making the contanier explde. Starbucks sells its coffee with a little valve that lets the CO2 out and keep the oxegen from comming. The coffee in a starbucks bag will stay fresh for 6 months.
- That the purity of the water effects teh flavor of both coffee and tea. To get a better tasting tea/cofee use filtered/bottled water whihc will take the impurities out of the water.
- starbucks coffee is brewed strong for two reasons. the first is that it allows for a fuller flavor. the second is becasue the coffees are meant to be served with a sweet pairment. It all depends on what type of bean you use, yet chcolate goes well with all of the coffees. also if the coffee is too bold for you they do serve a milder version if you ask for it. i can't remeber what it's called off the top of my head, yet if you request it they barrista should know what you're talking about.
