When given the chance to buy anything, candy, cheeses, meats, whatever for myself as an adult I find myself shocked by my own selections in retrospect. I caught an earlier bus to work today so that I could stop into Trader Joes for some groceries and I left with healthy foods instead of garbage. I picked up a bunch of instant Indian food to pack along with some naan for my work lunches. I planned my dinner to be salad. Not because I care about my health but because the sample of the salad was delicious. I scoff when people talk about buying produce at some organic place or other, but this romaine lettuce is really sweet and flavorful, and the other toppings of a cheese mixture and a vinaigrette of some kind really meshed. The sample also had turkey bacon but I was at the edge of my self-imposed budget and didn't really need it. In any case I accidentally have managed to purchase a load of healthy, vegetarian (unless you want to quibble over cheese in which case I don't care, shut up) food. For a self-professed carnivore / hedonistic eater I sure seem to be doing a better job at eating right than I have any right to expect. I'm secretly pleased to discover I can be happy eating healthy, and while it isn't a path I would pick, I guess I could live vegetarian (ovo-lacto) if I had to without undue whining. Vegan will remain way away from my diet, fuck that shit.
I also find it strange that when I eat "decadent" by my standards by cooking homemade pizza in bacon grease 4 days of the week I still averaged a healthier diet compared to the fast food laden diet of 90% of my coworkers. I would almost say the bacon soaked pizza is healthier than the fast food by itself even. Amazing.
My salt intake might need a reduction someday however. Low sodium is not a lifestyle I could pick.
I don't understand why so many people say cooking is too hard. I am the laziest cook and I still can pull it off. I also am sick of the complaint "it takes too long". You waited 20 minutes for your shitty pizza. I spent 15 assembling mine, it cooked in 15. Mine tastes more than 10 minutes worth of my time better. Another perk of the whole thing is you tailor to your preference not safe middleground whatever the meal is. You get total control over the food, why would you give that up?
God I love food.
