Go Grease Lightening!

Working another shift at the Ronald McDonald House and since I didn't want to sit at the front desk and twiddle my thumbs all night, I thought I'd update my journal.

Christmas was good this year.  I got to play with my niece who is still as adorable as ever.  I got some gift certifcates, a dvd, a Christmas CD, and a Bath & Body Works kit.  Seems like I'll be celebrating Christmas well into the new year...still haven't exchanged gifts with any of my friends.  Although, I did drop off my gift at the Hagans on Christmas Eve after my volunteer shift at the House.  (Sheesh, I've been working here a lot!)  I'm actually quite proud of myself this year and the gifts I gave out to people but I'm most proud of the gift I gave to Kelly and Angela.  It was themed.  I gave them things to remind them of some of stuff that we did together this year.

Anyway, the best present I got (other than the car I bought myself) was the 6 months of car insurance coverage that my parents bought me.  Woohoo!  That was a nice suprise on Friday when my dad offered to buy it for me (of course he offered before we were quoted on my insurance rate)...I think my heart stopped when the woman quoted my car insurance rate for me.  And that was after all the discounts they gave me since my dad has been with this company since the beginning of time and they have all their insurance (auto, home, life) through them.  Unfortunately, being a single female under 25 with no previous car insurance and a slightly new car kinda hurt.  But the good news is that I think they quoted me high and will likely go down after the underwriters look at my file.  I mean, I have an excellent credit score and my car has a tons of saftey features and anti-theft protection.  In 6 months when I have to renew my insurance, perhaps I can convince them to prorate it or something since I'll be 25 in September.  It doesn't hurt to ask, right?

So, I haven't driven a car in years.  Even when I was in driver's ed, I was horrible at it.  I could basically go in a straight line and that's it.  I was horrible at my turns (which is kinda important).  Don't know why they gave me a license.  Lucky for me (bad for everyone else on the roads in Idaho), they changed the requirements to get a licenese a few years after I got mine.  Teenagers now have a graduated license here in Idaho in which they have to log so many hours of driving time with an adult.

Yesterday, my dad drove me to the parking lot of a local middle school so I can practice driving around the lot, parking, and back up.  I hate parking and backing up with a passion to rival a thousand burning suns.  I'm horrible at it.  I'm pretty sure if there were other cars in the parking lot (it was deserted) I would have hit any car parked next to me or behind me as I was backing up.  I have no sense as to where the hood of my car is (even though I had my dad stand at each corner so I can get an idea).  As I can't back up straight for the life of me and I tend to start turning to soon as I'm backing up which means I would hit the car on either side of me.  Oy.

Perhaps I'm exagerating.  I guess I did ok.  When I parked, I was in the lines...I was kinda straight.  Problem is that the parking spaces at the school are pretty big so God save me when I try to park in a compact space.

Unfortunately, I don't have much chances to practice this week.  It gets pretty dark early here and it's raining all week.  It rained all day yesterday but I had a small window when it stopped and my dad and I took advantage of it.  Looks like I won't be driving around the parking lots until this weekend.

Still don't know what I'm going to name him...Although I am leaning heavily toward Sirius. Get it? Sirius Black. I drive a black Jetta. I need help, I know.
