Oohh, he called Darius "his friend" several times! then found out he really wasn't anything like advertised. I liked that bit about using a blank face to cover that he had no idea what expression he should make.
*polishes the violence until shiny* Nothing like bloodshed to get Mal all warmed up ^__^ This is one of the first chapters I wrote, as a preview snippet, and I'm sure you won't be surprised by that one bit.
Ok, i was starting to pick up that Darius wasn't, well that he was a great deal more important that he was leting on. So yay for information reveal, but now you're gonna make me wait to see how he deals w/ Ryou?! And Ryou w/ him? *whines* I"m from the US, we've been raised on instant gratification. You are causing me emotional distress!! o.O" But in the best way.
Sounds like I better have that next chapter ready for next week, or I'll be sued for emotional trauma :P Next chapter drops a few more tidbits of info. Though it won't necessarily leave you in a happy place either *Evil Smirk Of Death*
Lovely, as always. I'm thinking Darius might have more than one brother...he mentioned being raised with legitimate children plural. There's someone who was able to pass for him to non hounds in the army (including Terentius), who may or may not be the evidently notorious brother who the prince of Kaides wants to kill. And at least one brother is twice as tough and mean as Darius is, which carries some weight when he's Ghan the fricking Beast. Which is an awesome twist, by the way! It turned over some things I thought I knew, but somehow it really seems to fit. Like everyone else, I'm looking forward to seeing some of Ryou's special brand of sarcasm directed at our other protagonist. I also love the dogs to tiny little pieces--I looked up their names on wikipedia, since I assumed they're mythology allusions. One certainly is, but the other one appears to be a digimon, so maybe I need to qualify my search terms... I'm seriously excited to see the next chapter :-)
Darius mentioned children way back then, but he also only talked about the one brother; seeing the kind of period they're living in, this is an indication that whatever other siblings he had are now deceased. That was life back then! As for that lookalike, a bit more info in the next chapter

It's not important, but I skimmed a bit of the Persian section on Encyclopedia Mythica--maybe Zurvan, who's apparently an all-father of sorts, or from Simurgh, who's another giant bird like Chamrosh. Either way, it may or may not be insane, but it is certifiably awesome! You mentioned in another comment-reply that this section was actually one of the first parts you'd written--I'd be really interested to hear what the sources of inspiration were that contributed to the gestalt of this story, if you feel like posting about it somewhere along the line. I'm guessing that the idea of an equal power relationship between two people who are very physically mismatched was a cornerstone, but Darius-as-Ghan demonstrates how off the mark my guesses tend to be...
It's the first arc of a series of related stories that I would LIKE to write. I'd like it even more if they were already written, but alas they exist only in my head, and very tenuously at that for some of them

Yay! A new chapter! An informative one at that. Darius is Ghan? How intriguing. And where did he come up with the name Darius then? Does it have any personal significance? *peers at you* The line that made me squee the most: -Now that things were finally happening, now that he was bringing help to his friend, the pain was ignorable.- Ryou is just too adorable. ^-^
I can't wait to see where this goes, things should really start heating up now that Darius and Ryou have met up with Darius’s loyal puppies, ah, I mean the Assyrian armies. ^-^
One typo I saw: -Lord Ghan. Gahn the Beast.- You've misspelled Ghan.

As for the name Darius...yes indeed, there is some personal significance, and that's going to be a minor turning point in the coming chapters.
