Here's a little ficlet that jumped into my head after my umpteeth viewing of Serenity last night. Set during the movie, just after the Maidenhead. Cross-posted to ff_fanfic.

The last couple fics posted here all deal with scenes I picked out of the movie as 'telling' of a deeper connection between Mal and River.

By the way here is my list of reasons the Pilot and the movie support the pairing of Mal and River. Maybe some more fic ideas will take you...I can just feel the plot bunnies in this list bouncin' around.

Because in the Serenity the pilot and the movie we had so much shippy goodness between River and Mal.

1.He stands in the infirmary and watches River during Serenity the pilot episode.

In the movie...

2. Mal picks River up instead of her brother...so he must have been booking to holster his weapon and get to her before her loving brother.

3. When Mal answers Jayne about them having to kill her if she goes off again...River mouths his words and they made a point of intercutting that scene.

4. When Mal and Shepherd Book are talking he says...I could have left her there...I had an out...hell I had every reason in the 'verse to leave her there and haul anchor...This touching scene is intercut with yet another more shippy touching scene where Mal is sitting beside River as she sleeps.

Side note* I love that something new we see in Mal when he decideds to go to Miranda...a man of deep conviction.

5. On Miranda when they are all in the kitchen River is front center bathed in the light and Mal is beyond her speaking...then he moves to stand right beside her and then he steps up and stands right behind her.

6. And then the wonderfully triumphant scene when the only two people left standing are River and Mal and when the Fed's show up niether one of them has any intention of giving up without a fight.

7. The last scene is of them flying Serenity and that is the best shippy little interaction we could ask for.
