Hey.
We're not even moved to Nebraska yet and I've already said my first stupid thing. Behold idiocy:
"Why are there popcorn stores everywh...oh wait a minute."
Funny how a state that is basically a giant cornfield would have a popcorn store or two!
The town we are moving to is quite nice. People seem more polite, at least that's the first impression I got. First thing we did is went to see where I'd be working, then we searched town for a newspaper (turns out there is no Monday paper so we had to find one from yesterday). We circled some classifieds for places for rent, and then decided to call one that we had actually driven past, and was quite close to where I will be working.
The lady said rent was $900, and that is a bit much for us, at least for the first month or two, but then she said she had one that would be available on July 1st (right when we need it) for $625 a month, which is just a little more than what we are paying now for an apartment.
We will be renting a 2 bedroom, 1 1/2 bathroom townhouse, on a quiet street. It's got a beautiful view of the bluffs that the town is named after, as well as (of course) a giant cornfield. The kitchen is small but decent, and there is a little bitty cement patio off the back, facing a field that is the backyard for all the townhouses. It's also got a big unfinished basement (great for storage) with washer/dryer hookups.
The landlady/owner was super nice, the "application" was super short, and she will mail us a copy of the lease tomorrow. We already gave her the deposit, so that's one less thing we have to worry about. She also said that although they don't normally allow pets, she had no problem with our two cats, and would write them into the lease so we don't get into any trouble for having them.
I am amazed at how easy finding a place to live was. I was nervous about basically having today to go look and then end up calling people back and forth for two weeks. But this lady was great, and she was impressed that we both work, and had our references and deposit ready to go.
My future workplace seems cool too, a bit more relaxed than where I am now. I talked to one of the bosses there about transferring, and he said it shouldn't be a problem, although I will have to take a pay cut, because their rates are lower, and they don't have my position open. So I might have to cashier again, but that's not a big deal. With the extra that Joe will be making, I would hardly have to work at all, but I would like to keep busy and get money saved. We checked out Joe's future workplace too, but we were not to introduce ourselves as the managers there had not been told that they didn't get the job as store manager and that someone was being brought in from another store. So we got a soda and sat in the lobby and relaxed in the air conditioning for a while and casually looked around. Joe bumped into his big boss there, who came over quickly to tell us he would get us more information about when Joe starts there, and then disappeared just as quickly before the workers caught on. We think Bossman was there to tell the managers about their decision.
So, thus far everything is going fairly smoothly, considering how little time we have to do everything. I have already started packing, and intend to do a bit each day so that moving day everything will be ready. :)
More later. Now is laundry time and more packing time. I am so tired! Tootles.
