* Best overall performance ever IMO *
Blockhead was lots of fun. He played with a bunch of loops on his laptop while DJ Signify worked the turntable. Samples included Sexual Healing, Knight Rider, and Word Up by Cameo, which The Orb played in the very same spot 10 years earlier. The next performance was by One Self, of which DJ Vadim is a member. Vadim is a very smooth performer. He's so fluid when he plays that he looks like he's massaging the turntable. The MCs were excellent as well. David went on about how the girl MC was very cute and probably Trinidadian. He has in-laws from there. The male MC reminded me of Mos Def with his straightforward and friendly delivery. The whole band was tight.
Everyone around us was either high or drunk, but most of the crowd were well behaved and very very excited. I haven't seen that many people dance at a concert venue in a very long time.
Coldcut's performance was a multimedia onslaught which words can scarcely describe. Audio and video samples were triggered live and with scalpel-like precision using all manner of interface. Images used include private studio footage of guest singers, Anthony Daniels dancing around in his C3PO costume, and Gonzo from The Muppet Show inhaling green smoke from his trumpet. When Coldcut left the stage the first time the audience roared so loud that my ears were sore. They returned for an encore of course. Paid In Full and Everything Is Under Control.
