Is it really May already?

May 01, 2009 20:33

Where has this year gone? I can't believe it's already the first of May 2009! Then again, I'm running a week behind everyone, so maybe that's part of the problem. I had some stomach problems last week, so I took off early on Sunday, went to work but took off as soon as I got there on Monday, I've got Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday off, and then I'd originally planned to take today off to go see "Wolverine". So, six days off, what do I do? Spend them all in bed! I felt so weak and drained from the stomach bug that I didn't do much the first few days, then I felt tired but better and spent more time in bed recouperating, then what happens last night? I get hit with one hell of a set of cramps and don't feel up to getting out of bed at all today. Damn. I mean, it's nice to catch up on sleep/rest and all, but this is getting stupid! Six days and all I accomplished, aside from rest, was watching a heck of a lot of episodes of "Bleach" (am I the only one that actually likes filler episodes?) edited a few chapters of one of my novels and did a lot of reading. It feels like such a waste.

Hope the rest of you have been fairing better than I have.

And, since it's the beginnig of a new month, here's the recommended reading list from April.

As alwasys, bolded titles are the best of the best. Hearts are based on a five heart system, five being the best.

"Peace Maker" Volume 2 by Nanae Chrono ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ 1/2

The second volume of the rerelease of the manga about the Shinsengumi. The art, as always, is beautiful, and the story moves along just fine in this volume. It's a pretty popular anime/manga, so anything I say has already been said before, but I just can't stress enough how much I love this manga!

"Life, the Universe and Everything" by Douglas Adams ♥ ♥ ♥ 1/2

The third (of five) book in Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. It's humor and sci-fi, in case you're not familiar with the series. Now, the first book is pure genius. Clever, witty, and quirky. The second book was cute. The third? Kind of a let down. It just lacked something that the first book had, and I was, to some extent, disapointed in this book. It's not that it wasn't funny, it was, but it just felt like same-ol-same-ol, if you know what I mean. I bought all five as a set, and this didn't put me off enough not to try the final two, but it definately wasn't the gem of the series. Not sure the plot made much sense either. Only read it if you're a fan of the first two.

"Plum Lucky" by Janet Evanovich ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ 1/2

I love the Stephanie Plum books. They're hillarious. For those of you who don't know the series, it's about Trenton, NJ's worst, but luckiest, bounty hunter. The between-the-numbers books kind of, like the title suggests, go in between the main series. They always have holiday themes (this time it's St. Patrick's Day) and feature, instead of Steph's usual honeys Joe and/or Ranger, the ever mysterious Desil.

This time out Steph and Desil are hot on the trail of a maybe-leprechan and a bag full of dirty money. Stephanie's crazy grann has taken the money off to Atlantic City to play the slots, but if they don't get it back to the mobster it "belongs" to in time then a (possibly) talking horse is going to get a one way trip to the glue factory. In typical Stephanie fashion, it only goes down hill from there.

These books are hillarious. They're quick, easy reads that are guarunteed to lighten even the darkest mood. And they're relativly well written to boot. Give the series a try! And, if you already have, then read this one. It's great.

"Slave Boy" by Evangeline Anderson ♥ ♥ ♥

A very cliched sci-fi male/male erotic story about two peacekeepers who are forced to masquerade as master and slave in order to observe protical while negotiating a treaty between two peoples. Of course, they have secret feeling for each other that they are forced to confront thanks to the erotic situations they are put in while working this case.

There was nothing original in the whole book, and the dialoge was annoyingly stiff and formal, but for a quick bit of smut it wasn't half bad. I have it in e-book form if anyone wants to give it a try, but it doesn't come highly recommended from me.

"The Desire of the Gods" by Insanity Team ♥ ♥ 1/2

Another yaoi press m/m manga. The art was only so-so, at best, and the plot was boring and predictable. The smut was only so-so, heat wise, as well. And, although I didn't know it at the time, it's only volume one. I didn't care enough to find out what happens in volume two.

"Hell to Pay" by Simon R Green ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Book seven of the Nightside series, which is one of the best dark fantasy series I've read in years. It's about a city that exists within the city of London, where evey dark desire is available for a price. The novels are first person, told from the point of view of the Nightside's most notorious PI, John Taylor. This time, John's out to find the missing granddaughter of the Nightside's wealthiest business tycoon, and he's working on a clock. If Melissa Griffin isn't found by midnight, when she turns eighteen, then her grandfather's will is void and she'll never inheret his vast fortune. And he may or may not loose his soul to the Devil. But, as usual, someone is trying to stop John... any way possible.

I can not recommend this series enough. Read it! Just don't start with this book *LOL* Start at the begining, obviously. I hear there'll be tweleve books total, btw, so this is just over half way through. I, for one, can't wait to see what happens next.

"Author's Pet" by Deathco Cotorino ♥ ♥ ♥

A typical yaoi manga. Decent art, predictable story that doesn't require much brain power to concentrate on, and pretty good smex. Take it or leave it. There are several short stories in this volume, all stand alone, and it was cute if forgettable.

life, sick, books, recommended reading list
