Last Minute Travels

After calling Eclipse Nightclub last night, I found out that the doors opened at 9pm. K also had received an email from the lead singer confirming that it was at nine. Finding this out at 7:30pm was not exactly what I was hoping for, but we both agreed to head up to Jacksonville to see Assemblage 23 and Angel Theory.

The drive there was uneventful. I tried to get earplugs at the last minute, but found a pair in the pen holder in my car. This was quite fortunate because it was anything but quiet inside Eclipse.

The club was kind of cozy, with little dampening, and with many large speakers. We got there just in time to see Angel Theory go on. They played a decent set for a group I have never heard of before, although I was somewhat puzzled as to what the exchange was between the Lead Singer and the sound tech in the back.

Assemblage 23 went on next and I was impressed by how personable Tom Shear was. The man literally radiated kindness, and I think if I had engaged in a conversation with him with absolutely no knowledge of who he was, it would be impossible not to like him.

He and the keyboardist/drum machinist wove a fantastic set. When they played "Drive" I sung along and swayed with my cosort to the beat, completely living in the moment. They played a few more extra songs, including a remix that they made up on the spot.

I bought a t-shirt and a CD and was amused by the vendor asking me if I sure I wanted just a large t-shirt! I also got the impression that some of the girls thought I was on the payroll as security, because they were putting their drinks by me and dancing close-by.

Although I was not on the payroll, yes it would have been a grave mistake to bother any of them. Luckily pretty much everyone at the concert was very respectful of one another. During all of this, a photographer who was there grabbed me and said "God damn man, you should work here, you are BUFF!!" I was amused and touched at the same time.

Before we hit the road, K thanked Mr.Shear for his email and I got both of the band members to sign my CD. I also thanked them for playing "Drive" live, it made my night.

On the way home, there was nothing but the open road before us. We made it home and promptly went to sleep.
