The first time I had to shoot a civilian-- hostile, actually. They lose civilian status the moment the Infection hits their system-- it was the first I'd actually been faced with the Infected. In my position, I only had to supervise. Direct. For the first days, I was perfectly isolated from what was really happening. But as our numbers ( Read more... )

I, um... meant to make this private to Billy.

Dinner sounds fine.

I..'m not trying to force anything, West. Don't worry about it if you don't want to.

No, I do. You aren't forcing anything.

[Sylar went down to the cafeteria around dinner time, hoping West was there or would be there soon. They had never really set a time, but the people working dinner were lifted to a few hours, so he could wait. His friend seemed upset, even if it was meant to be private. And quite frankly? Sylar was hoping he had a friend to speak to at the moment that wasn't Prefect, someone he wasn't constantly ambivalent with.

Not seeing the other man, he slid into a seat at the end of one of the tables, hoping not to see Elle, Adam, Claude, Peter, or Veronica right now. He just hoped West had the same idea of coming early.]

[Although he was normally one to take his duties seriously, West ducked out of the kitchen when he noticed Sylar's arrival. Partially, it was an act of spite, as he considered kitchen work demeaning and still figured Morgan just stuck him there to get her jollies at placing him in a servile position. For all his civility, he was still angry with his warden, and if she wanted to believe that he wouldn't be just because she complimented his hair or what-have-you, then perhaps it was all the better for him. It would be easier to get away with things.]

Hello.

[He offered Sylar a quick, half-hearted smile, as he joined him at the table.] Dinner tonight is fish and chips. [He thought on it for a moment, then wrinkled his nose slightly] In the loosest sense.

"Hello."

[Sylar watched West take the seat across from him, forgetting that the man worked the dinner shift in the kitchens. He himself worked breakfasts but the two shifts rarely saw each other. And Sylar skipped out as often as he could anyway. It wasn't fair that he should have to work when so few others did, especially given that half of them working were wardens or punished by their wardens.]

"It sounds great." [He smiled lightly at West's greeting, trying to remain friendly. It had been awhile since they had really spoken and the last decent conversation had been during a flood. It was.. a bit awkward. He suspected they both shared that sort of nervous embarrassment as much as they both might try to deny it.] "..How are you?"

[West clasped his hands, resting them on the table, looking oddly business-like.]

I'm fine. And yourself?

[Sylar leaned forward with both forearms on the edge of the table, watching the man he wasn't certain whether or not he could consider a friend.]

"I'm.. fine." [The two were quite the pair. They were both stubborn in their own way and enjoyed their privacy.] "Is Billy--?"

[West blinked. He still wasn't quite sure what to make of people associating him and Billy together, sort of like they were a couple. Not that he would have been opposed... He supposed that's what bothered him the most. It felt as though he was always reminded of the fact that he and Billy really were just friends.]

He's... also fine. I'm... [He had no idea what he was trying to articulate, so he just blurted out whatever came to mind] giving him a bit of space these days.

[Well, that was an awkward thing to say. It was true, sort of. He'd been spending quite a lot of time on his own lately, although he always came back to their-- er, Billy's room at night]

[Sylar had only asked because the last time they had talked, West had mentioned rescuing Billy. It was his sad attempt at creating conversation. Obviously there was more going on, however, if West was referring to giving him space. It sounded a bit too much like himself with Prefect in some ways, though he would never quite realize the very real difference between the two pairings; namely, that he and Prefect really were only friends.]

"Is everything all right?" [It was awkward, even as he said it. He felt like he was trying to force a friendship here where there might not be one, desperate for people to rely on outside of the Factory Man that would be abandoning him soon.] "Why are you.. giving him space?"

[West sighed, looking down reluctantly] I've been staying with him for about two months now. I feel as though I'm imposing. He's... [He mulled over his words for a moment, trying to pick the right ones-- nothing too close and personal, but not too vague. He does consider Sylar something of a friend, after all] I feel as though I weigh him down. Some space would be good for him, I think.

[Sylar's lips twisted up in a very vague smile, glad to hear that someone was in a situation a bit like his own.] "I understand, probably better than you know. You don't want to be the reason if he fails, the excuse for him not to try. You want to help him and it seems like the only way you can is to distance yourself from him?"

[It was guessing.]

[He shook his head] He doesn't need my help. Not unless there's a flood or he's lost his mind in a port. Usually, it's the other way around.

[He stayed silent for a while, then:] He wants to help me. And he's such a... [He closed his eyes and smiled faintly] bright and vibrant person.

[And then there's reality. He looked at Sylar, frowning a little bit.] And I don't want to rob him of that.
