Klavier had been heading back down the hall when the clock chimed. His notes were safely contained inside his left pocket, keys (useless here) and cell phone (also still useless) relegated to his right front and back left pockets, respectively. In the resonant corridor of the hallway, however, the peal of bells made him stop, brow furrowed, and turn--just as darkness descended and the lights gave out under its shroud.
He stood, frowning, as the sudden sound of--was... was that hammering?--
--of construction echoed through the building, the darkness congealing and...
Something scrabbling, scraping rapidly made him look up--
...what...
What in God's name was that?
It came crawling over the ceiling and walls, some sort of eyeless man-thing, pale and mottled, limbs twisted and broken--a disjointed doll scrambling over vertical walls and inverted ceilings, white teeth bared and slick with saliva.
Klavier barely had time to swallow his horror and process the sight, to understand it when it was followed by more--three, five--
Shit.
Klavier wasn't a stupid man. While his level of genius may have been debated, he definitely wasn't stupid enough to hang around for these--these hallucinations and their heavy-bodied companions that were filling in the rear.
He turned and ran.
