Everyone welcome the newest member of my sewing family -
Olive!
She's a 1973 Singer 247, and she absolutely beautiful. She goes straight and zig-zag with five different stitch lengths. Best of all, she has a drop-in bobbin and metal body.
I love 70s machines so much. They're heavy clunckers, but they sew small, neat stitches very quickly. Plus, I like the idea of having a machine that does a few things really well, rather than a lot of bells and whistles I'd never use. I do need to monkey around with her a bit more to get the tension perfect. The stitches look fine, but every once and a while the top thread doesn't pick up the bottom one, so there are little gaps in the stitches. That was happening with my Mum's machine at home, so I think it's something I need to play around with a bit.
The only problem is that she's missing a base. She probably used to live in a machine cabinet. It just means that some of her machine parts are out in the open gathering dust. Once I'm settled in a proper apartment, I'd love to get a proper machine cabinet for her.
Speaking of, how gorgeous are the machine cabinets at
Arrow Cabinets? I love the Auntie Em and Ethel especially.
*sigh* I can't wait for the day to have my own proper, real sewing room.
