With regards to recreations

I'd love to get people's thoughts on something I've been dwelling on too much lately... the costuming issue of artistic interpretation vs accuracy. That is to say, when is it a plus, when is it pushing into "original inspired by..." territory, and when does it just make a bad costume. Personally I think that deviations from 'accuracy' in favour of what you think will look nicer IRL, as well as what you personally LIKE, are perfectly justifiable.

As for the fabric, this place has silk in colours I haven't found elsewhere:

Usually I go for accuracy above almost everything, but I have made exceptions for better fabric textures (even if the texture of the original isn't apparent) because I think it adds a certain amount of originality and depth to a costume.

I can see your dilemma for sure... and I'm not sure what I would do in that situation. Budget is usually also an issue somewhat. :/

My feeling is that the texture that fabric will impart is more valuable to the costume than having the exact right colour. It will look different in different lights anyway, without a reference right beside you, people probably won't notice the difference all that much, and hey, there's always photoshop ^_-
